Chapter 31
' TRYING TO FORGET
VT was a melnnclioly Tony who
dragged hlinelf Into his flat
trier lie ride with Mary Lou.
"What a Jam that was!" ho ex
claimed to himself. Ho was forced
to admit, however, Hint ho was glad
to have soen Mury Lou again.
The thought of her wedding only
added more co;iln to his lire of dis
content. It had astounded Tony to
discover that his affection for Mary
Lou actually bad reached a point
where he no longer could deny It.
Ho tried to forget Mary Lou, her
wedding and everything In connec
tion with It but the matter bad be
come an obsession.
Finally, In desperation, Tony de
cided that he would attend Uryn
ninr's farewell bachelor dinner. In
certain moods men Hlio to torture
themselves.
Jlrynmor, he knew, had Issued the
Invitation to him for one reason,
nnd one reason only to gloat over
bis defeated rival.
"Well, let him crow," Tony mut
tered. "1 deserve tc he gloated over
fool that I am."
He dressed listlessly.
"I may ho n jackass for going to
tills dinner," Tony thought as ho
drove to the club, "but what do I
caro?"-
Drynmor greeted him with half
hearted cordiality.
"It wus nice of you to come, Tlth
erlngton." Tony grinned.
"Yes, I thought It rather sporting
myself."
'Brymnor tried to conceal his em
barrassment by turning to another
guest. Tony drifted over to the
cocktail bur.
"Side car," be ordered, and felt
better after drinking It. lie hnd
another and felt bettor still.
' At dinner Tony found hlmsolf
seated betnoeu two men ho didn't
know, and didn't Ttsh to know.
Still, they were willing to drink
with him, and 3rynmor hadn't stint
ed tils guests In tho mutter of wlno.
There were neat ly n dozen varieties
of It, and Tony mi m pled thcin all.
Speeches wont with tho cham
pagne. Pompously, tho man on
nryninor's right nrone to propose
a toast to the health of tho brldo
groom. Ho mado n lengthy speech, full of
tho usual rctnarks-ythe boys would
miss their gay, carefree bachelor
brothor; matrimonial clmckles wore
closing In on him: they supposed
he would go the Ruburbnn wny nnd
be an empire builder. . , ,
There were laughs nt this olut,
nnd sly knowing glances In llryn
mor's direction.
Tony's fingers suddenly snapped
the stem of tho glass he was hold
ing. Ills cheerful, philosophic mood
passed. In tho flush of an eye, to
one of cold fury.
"Fatuous Idiot' he muttered un
dcr bis brent)!. 'If be thinks I'm
going to listen to this twndille. . . ."
Uefore the crov d's laughter hnd
subsided. Tony sprnug to his feet
nnd drowned the speaker's volco by
shouting hoarsely;
''For he's n folly pood felloir
Vor he's it tally good fellow"
Somewhat surprised, tho uthcrs
took up the song. It wasn't quite
time for It, hut they conld only con
clude that Tltbcrlugtou's friendly
enthusiasm had caused him to for
get himself.
, Tho speaker turned red In the
face, and glarod angrily nt Tony,
who was stundliiR with one foot on
the table, waving n broken glass.
When the din of tho song llunlly
subsided, Drynmor rose to reply. Me
fore he had a chance to begly, Tony
yliouieii:
"I, the defeated rival, salute
you!"
He sent glass at champagne sail
ing through the air, and It narrow
ly escaped Urynmor'B head. The
guests 'lowled as It o 'ashed to the
floor. Several whispered to their
nelgbliors, , "Not qulto the best
taste," or "Must havo had too
much."
Tony realized that his conduct
was becoming abominable, but lit
continued to lead the riot by wav
ing glasses wildly as he rocked back
nnd forth with one foot on his chair,
and the other perched precariously
on the edgo of the table.

Presently a waiter approached
and tactfully intimated that Mr.
Tlthertngton was wanted oo the
telephone. Tony hnd seen Hrynmor
motion to the same chap a moment
before. He knew it was a lie, but
took the hint.
"Kicked out," he grinned to the
waiter, once they were In the hall
outside. The man cougljed apolo
getically, and Tony banded him a
ten shilling note.
"A purse of gold to the execu
tioner!" he exclaimed grandilo
quently. Knocking his opera hat askew
with the Bllver knob of his black
ebony cane, he sauntered down the
corridor and out Into the street.
The evening was young, and Tony
decided to visit the Emerald Drag
on. It had been some time since
be had mado an appearance there.
"Where's that littlo dancing girl,
Clarice?" he demanded of the head
waiter. "The girl with the red
hair?"
"Oh, she Is gone," with nn expres
sivo gesture. "I do not know where,
but they say Bho is on the conti
nent." Tony wandered toward tho dance
floor, sat down and ordered cham
pagne. To his uncertain eyes It
seemed that dozens of wallers re
sponded to his wishes.
Suddenly he opled a girl sitting
opposite him. She wore un alio-,
clous pink frock with sleeves. In
another moment he would have
stumbled ncross the floor and asked
her to dance, but Instead Jib Jumped
to Ills feet, called for his hill, anil
departed.
Next ho went to the Jungle Club.
There ho came upon a parly which
included Gwendolyn L'ari'iilheis.
She greeted bin) with n cold stare.
"Hey, thvundolyn," he i;riimed in
ho passed her table, "don't let your
race freezo that way. I'd advise you
to smile."
Tho others laughed, but Gwen
dolyn blushed in fury. Someone
asked Tony to join the parly, but
bo waved his' hand In refusal and
made for tho door. Ho wanted lo
go somewhere else . . , somewhere
else. ...
Tho rest of tho night was a con
tinuous round of other nigh: clulm.
Tony himself didn't remember
which ones they were. Ma hud for
gotten his cur, nnd left Ills fate In
the hands of willing tnxl drivers.
Ho had a befuddled ImpresKlon of
climbing one set at stairs, and
down another ... of Beelng tables

He was trying to escape from him
self , . . trying to escape from
thoughts of Mury Lou.
Four o'clock, when tho first fin
gers of dawn woro stretching over
tho horizon, found him sentcd on u
stool In n rodeo stall on u dingy
sldo street whero he never hnd been
before.
"Come, on, boys, let's oat. The
treat's o.i mo."
Ho waved nu unsteady arm to
ward half a dozen down-nnil-ouleis
who ant near him.
"What'll It be, hoys? Order any
thing yon. like. We'll eat everyihfng
in tho whole bloomlu' stuiid. . . ."
Tho mnn beside Tony applauded.
"The guv'nor's a wit. 'o Is."
Tony nccepted tho compliment,
and ordered a fresh cup of coffee
tor each of thoin.
After a few minutes, a man with
a hurdy-gurdy appeared on tho
scone.
"Ah, music hath charms!" Tony
cried, nnd upset his con'cc down
his shirt front.
"Hero!" nnd lie threw half a
crowd to tho man. "Lot's have some
music to greet tho new day."
The littlo niustnched man in the
clieckored cap, surprised at the sign
of a customer, was only too ready
to oblige. ' Ho turned tho bundle,
and the machine did tho rest.
Tony encouraged the others to
lift their voices 111 song. Ho con.

mournful tuno, the hurdy-gurdy

Tony covered his head with his
hands and rested Ills woary head on
ttic counter. The othora laughed at
him as tears came to his face.
A minute later ho arose and paid
the hill, bid an affectionate fare
well to his nowly found friends,
and started to stagger liomoward
"Must pull myselt together," he
muttered, "It's Mary Lou'i wed
