COHEN AND KELLY
BEAT SCOTCHIVIAN
N BUSINESS DEAL
There te a pleasing weather en
tertainment, which opened at the
Fox Craterlan theatre last night
to run until Sunday, for It U a
flqub-barrolod laugh show cunelst
Ins of a short talking corned)' ly
tluwe, Inlmjtahle funstera, Oliver
Hnfdy and, Stun. Laurel, depicting
among other' thlnns their being
tilokled at a niiiht club; which rocku
thi house with merriment, followed
by the feature picture, "The Co
bena and, Kollys In Scotland," In
which that other pair of favorite
dialect comedlnna,; Charles Murray
and ' George' Sidney, bring much
laughter with their petty jealousies,
antics unci suylngs, Tho only other
thing In the whole entertainment
program Is the Fox Movietone
News.
The feature picture Is out and
out slapstick comedy and very
much "lowbrow", but as you give
way to laughs and giggles you would
not have It otherwise, it requires
no thought whatever and Is packed
with merriment for theatre nsoers
who like that kind or entertain
ment. Aiding Charlie Murray as Kelly,
and the rotund little George Sid
ney of tho Hebraic dialect as Co
hen, in their cntetralnment efforts,
is the buxom Kate I'rice as Kelly's
wlfo and Vera Gordon as Mrs.
Cohen. 1
The explanation of the prosence
In Scotland of Cohen and Kelly,
former business partners In the
United States,, 1b explained by the
desire of each, unknown to the oth
er, to corner the ladies' cloth mar
ket. The fun begins from tho tune
they arrive In Edinburgh to make
parcbases and unexpectedly run into
each other .and continues 'throngh
a aeries of mixups until the finale,
where they are reunited partners
leaving for-home, having by their
united clever business ability done
two Scotch business men out of
half a million dollars.- You can seo
bow absurdly absurd that fact
would be. .' "
Especially ridiculous humor are
the golf games In which Cohen and
Kelly, take part, nml a race horse
soquence; and then araiin whore
each tries to commit suicide when
facing seeming bankruptcy. Tho
suicide attempt also gets them Into
Turkish towel garb and more enm
ody situations, with their wives
going into a seance, and the sur
prising reappearance of tho hus
bands throwing tho women Into
hysterics. n. A. K.

Tony looked at ber and smiled

"You are raking me over the

Jay's dark almond-shaped eyes
brightened, . - . ... ( .
i; "Mary Lou Is up In the altera

. , Tony thanked ber and ran , up
the stairs, .,. ,.. . . , , -
He. was . greeted by a quiet Mary
Lou,, cool and eelt-poBsessed. To
lila embarrassment he found him
celt stammering -over bis apology
like a schoolboy,
"tell me." be broke off In the
middle-of It, "what was the matter
with you last night, Mary Lou?"
"Nothing at all," she said quick
ly.. "I didn't feel very well, so 1
thought It was best to go home."
:.."But you're better now?"
She nodded ber neatly shingled
bead.
"Yes, I'm mucb better today,
thanks."
.. "I'm glad of. that,", aald Tony., :
He paused, wondering what else
he could say . to give blm an ex
cuse for staying. For some unci
plalnable reason be wanted to talk
with her. .,i
"Look here, Mary Lou," be .be
gan, but she Interrupted.. ;,
"I'm afraid 1 haven't any time
to talk with you now, Tony. And
you really must go, for we're un
usually busy today. You have no
business here in the shop during
working hours, you know."- i
This time Tony was prepared
for her outspoken suggestion that
he leave.
Triumphantly be produced from
his pocket the neatly printed card
he had found outside the shop
"Smart Delivery Boy Wanted, t ;
"I'm here on business," he point
ed out serloiiBly, holding the card
before her, .
"Aunt - Etholberta has cut me
off, nnd I suspect that you know
the reason for It. This time It's
definite, and I bavo no hopes of
gottlng another penny from ber.
Therefore I've got to have a Job.
tWhat about this errand-boy prop
ositlon?" i
He grinned, expecting Mary Lou
to laugh at him. Instead she looked
st him with serious, quizzical eyes.
.."Very well.", she Bald calmly.
"I'll take upon myself the responsi
bility of engaging you. Your Balary
will be 15 shillings a week, and
you'll begin work this minute. And
your .first -job today will be to de
liver this gown to Miss Gwendolyn
Carrutliera. : I believe you know
her address,. Be sure that you
apologize for the unfortunate mis
take that was made last night"
Her sudden outburst robbed
.Tony of bis usual ready wit While
he was groping vainly for some
clever remark to offer In reply, she
thrust a rani board box Into his
arms and shut the door In bis face.
The. wind had beon taken com
pletely out of Tony's sails, and , he
looked In amazement at the gaily
decorated box under bis arm. Then
he chuckled.
"Well, that's score one for Mary
Lou," he muttered. "But why not
play .up to this game?. It may turn
ut to- b amusing yet."
Ha, swung the box under his arm,
and let himself cut to the street
by a side door lo avoid another en
counter with Jay.
The woatlier had clinneed since
ho bad entered the store. The skies
had clouded, nnd raindrops splashed
down on the scurrying pedestrians.
Tony turned up his coat collar,
spotted tiro bus he wanted, nnd
ran. .for It.: As lie crossed the
jtreot. the box slipped from under
Ills arm. and the wind sent It scur
rying Into the gutter, .
He dashed for It, hut a horse's
hoot beat him to It. Undaunted,
the horse galloped on, the box sur
ronudlng Its leg like a circus Irap
ptugaiid the dress trailed behind
In the mud.
Tony shouted . hoorsely to the
driver, but to no avail. He re
trieved the drese with difficulty,
wrapped It hastily lo a newspaper
he carried, and rushed back to the
bus.

Mr. and Mrs. Ttay Colemitn left
Sunday-for Diamond lake,where
er, Tony wondered whether to de
liver the "package at the front door
or tbe back. A notice on tbe front
door, however, decided tbe point
for blm. i - r (
It read: "Please deliver all
packages at tbe side entrance."
He rang tbe bell Impetuously,
and Gwendolyn herself opened tbe
door. ,"'
"Why, Tony . . Her greenish
eyes viewed blm with surprise.
"What are yon dqlng here at tbls
time of day? peliverlng tbe meat,
or something?" .
Tony looked down sheepishly at
the untidy papkage under bis arm.
He began to see that it might not
be so mucb fun after all. - j ,
"As a matter of fact," ne: stam
mered, "It's your dress from Mra.
Jerome's shop."
Gwendolyn's face flushed with
anger.
- She snatched the package from
him, held up the crumpled, torn,
mud-splashed remains of wbat once
had been an expensive evening
frock of pale green taffeta.
She stared at the dress In dis
may, then looked up at. a. red-faced
Tony. '
"What's the meaning! this out
rage, anyway?" ahe deroadded. The
tone -of her, voice, should have
warned blm. ; , . ,
"W-why, M iust dropped In at
the shop and Mary Lou asked me
to ; bring the dres around to
you , . .,"
At that remark Gwendolyn flew:
Into a rage. . ;
' "I've never fteard of anything ep
low. SO rottenly mean. You think
you're making tool of me, don't
you, Tony Tltlierlngton? You and
Mary Lou Don't think 1 can't see
through tbls trick. It's a put-up
job between you two to make me
feel small. If yon ever so much
as dare to show your face at this
house again I'll ..."
Here Gwendolyn'a Imagination
failed her. She flung the rag of a
dress In bis face, and slammed the
door.
"Whew!" Tony ejaculated, a mo
ment later. "1 seem to have torn
It and no. mistake. Oh, damn this
dress, . .. ,." ....... ,
Seeing a dust bin handy, he
threw .the dress Into it, slammed
down the lid with a gesture of ills
gust and , stalked off to get some
iuncli. -. .- - - . . ... ... ,
Ho . wondered .If Mary Lou had
known what would happen when
be delivered- the dress to Gwen
dolyn. ,Or had it been entirely his
fault tor getting the dress Into
such a mess? He supposed It was.
but It was too late now for regrets.
At any rate, he told himself, lie
was fed to the teeth Willi, girls
,-r-Mary.Lou and, Gwendolyn Cor
rutbers In particular. ,., ;
He'd be banged If 'he'd worry
about either of them- Let Gwen
dolyn go to tbe devil and Mary Lou
to Brynmor. for all he cared.
The next morning, however, saw
a very contrite Tony on his way
to Jay's gown shop. ' He had con
eluded that It probably would be
best If he went back nnd explnlned
just what had happened. It was
an unpleasant Job, but It bad to be
done. . ,
The fates were against him. for
It wasu't Mary Lou, but Jay who
greeted blm. He had come to bold
Jay In considerable respect. .
"Well. Mr. Titherlngton?"
Briefly he explained what had
happened, his face becoming red
der and redder with each sentonce.
He Insisted that Jay accept his
check to square accounts for tbe
ruined gown. ,.- ;-.'
"Well, who did you do with It,
finally?" sbe asked.
"I'm afraid I threw It into a dirt
bin," be apologized, i ,.
Jay's comment In reply aston
ished him.
"Tony Tltherington. that's the
first virile tiling you've done -since
you came back to England.
He swallowed, i t
"Wbere'a Mary Lou?" .
"She's gone home." Jay replied
curtly..
"Where, to your flat?"
"No, to her home In Frlnwood.
And she's not Coming back to town
until after the , wedding."
"Oh the weddlngi" Tony seemed
unable to grasp the thought "Is
It to be soon?" . .. , ,
"Quite soon, I .-believe." Jay told
blm. .''They..-arranged It last
night ., , ." . .. -i ...
Then a pent-up conviction burst
forth from Jay as If she no longer
could keep It to herself. ,
