TUNIS. July 11. (P) Frunco
Itulian rivalries over naval parity,
tho peace treaties, Italian rights
in Tunis or any other subject,
arouse their loudest echoes here.
Tunis being the key to most of the
differences between the two Latin
powers.
Naval parity Is an issue here
because the French protccto'rato
of Tunis is opposite Italy on the
Mediterranean and it adjoins tho
Italian Trlpolltalnc.
What touches Tunis even moro
directly aro the tifo more spe
cific subjects in discussion. Ituly's
insistence upon maintenance of
ltulluns' peculiar status hero and
Italy's demand for more terrieory
in Africa.
These Inst two things date from
tho World war. In 1915, In ex
change for Italian entrance Into
the conflict, .Franco and England
promised readjustments of north
ern Italian boundaries and an ex
tension of- her. African possess
ions. Tho treaty, of Versailles and
Qabricl d'Annunzlo's picturesquo
seizuro of Flume settled tho Ital
ian boundary question. .
v At tho same time both Franco
and England gave Italy, additions
to hor. African possessions. On
tho south of Libya and alojng tho
west frontier of Tunis, Franc
conceded -Italy. 48.000 square miles
including, two . important oases. .
When Benito Musaolini came
into power at Itome he expressed
dius&tfsfo,ctJon with tho settlement
and wanted more room for Italy
In Africa,; . ,
This was complicated by the
most disturbing thing, of ull. Tho
French went into Tunis in 1881
and two years, later established
the present protectorate. When
they entered they found a large
colony . of Italians .who .had a
special arrangement with .the Bey
of Tunis.
Finally, in 1896,. France and
Italy made a treaty whereby Ital
ians In Tunis, now numbering
about- 100,000, or more than the
French poulntlon, were confirmed
In those rights.. Under, that pact
Italians and their children, thru
succeeding generations, remain
Italians, owing allegiance oTfiy. to
I ltnly and taught in schools sup
ported by Italy.
;In 1919, when tho treaty ex
i plred, France asked for a new
.arrangement. But by successive
I, three-months periods tho treaty
' has been continued in oflect.
France hiiB asked Italy to sub
scribe to tho same conditions as
atfply to other foreigners, in. Tun-Is.-
This would moan that Ital
ians would remain Italians and
their children, at their majority,
might choose cither French or
itnllnn nationality. But succeeil-
' lng generations, born In Tunis,
automatically would bo French.
Franco might also give another
16.000 or 20.000 square miles on
tho south of Libya. Negotiations
along thoso lines have been spas
modic for - two years, 1 with no
grent results. . , ,

Medford Ice and Storage Co.
Has Forty Million Pounds
Now On Hand for Fruit
Season. . v :
The Medford Ice and Storage
company, in preparation for- the
fruit -r hipping season, now has in
Its storage warehouses, 20,000 tons
of ice, and during the season, ex
pect to manufacture 6,000 more
tons, by dally runs. This will brlpg
tho Ice' facilities to 20,006 tons,
which Manager O- T. Bergner es
timates will be needed for, .the
shipping of the valley pears. . t
It is authorlatively-. stated , that
the Southern Pacific fruit train
schedule for the coming season
will be the same as last year. One
train, departing In the afternoon,
and ono in the night, and moro If
conditions warrant.
Additional equipment, installed
recently, will Increase tho speed in
Icing refrigerator cars, 30 per cent.
The storage track facilities of the
Southern Pacific, extend from
Stewart avenue to Voorhles cross
ing, which eliminates cramping tile
local yards.
The Ice company recently fin
ished complete overhauling of its
plunt. storage space, and prc
cooling plunt. Every section ot tile
storago and pro-cooling plant Is
now reached with a belt conveyor
system, and ull fault is handled
with speed, and like eggs. An ad
ditional floor has been added to
the pre-coollng plant giving more
space.
Figures Show Supply
A mathematician at tho ice
house, has figured out that the
40,000.000' pounds of ice now in
storage. If placed end to end would
reach from Medford to Weed,
Calif., and would make an icy
highway, extending from this city
to tho Southern Oregon Normal
school at Ashland, 12 feet wide,
IB Inches thick, and 16 miles long.
i Manager Bergner und four oth
ers yesterday visited the orchard
districts the past two days, and are
laying plans for the shipping of
the first car of Rogue river pears
August '1. They report a heavy
crop, and the fruit in excellent
condition.
A number of growers and ship
pers have inspected the Ice com
pany facilities the past week, and
tho management extends an Invi
tation for anyone to visit the plant
at any time.
