A forest fire, which Blurted yeB
tcrday noon In brush and timber at
the north cdse of the Hyatt I'ralric
dam, and just on the edge of the
' Crater national forest but within
Its protection area, was I'ortunatoJy
Rotten under control by last even
ing through hard work by a crew
of 14 fire fighters under E. J. Rog
ers, forest ranger, after it -had
burned over an area of an acres.
Inasmuch as the fire Is located
on 'the edge of much good timber
of the Crater forest, it was deem
ed very dangerous and every ef
fort was made to stop its progress
to prevent it getting into this good
timber and causing a big financial
loss. Had a wind arisen yesterday
afternoon the lire would probably
have spreud well into this timber
and caused a big conflagration.
Even today, although under con
trol, It was being carefully watched
.liy the fire fighters, in fear of
f wind.
The fire was started through
Bomo careless campers not having
thoroughly extinguished their camp
fire before departtae from the
scene.

CRATER LAKE BID
FOR G. 0. P. MEET
The fact that Portland has been
announced today as the meeting
place of the Republican state cen
tral commute on July 25, to select
a candidate for governor, removed
a possibility of Crater l.nkn lodge
being chosen as the location.
Concerning that possibility, John
W. Kelly, political writer of the
Orcgonian, wrote, while the meet
ing site was stfll up in the air,
the following:
"That the state committee should
meet at Crater Lake is the pro
posal sent to Metscham by II. YY.
Price, manager of the Crater Uike
lodge. 'He explains that Crater
Lake would be neutral ground for
all the aspirants seeking the nomi
nation and in this respect no one
would have an advantage. The in
vitation of Price came after Mets-
chan sent out the lettors for the
canvass, hut Price says it is not
ton late tor the state committee
men to vote for Crater Lake. And
he guarantees them the most beau
tiful sunrise in the world."
