Through the skill of radio en
gineers, tho listener-in Is now able
to Interpret radio programs just
as he likes them at tho twist of
a wrist, according to Clay Wltham,
Philco representative here. : The
new device, ho says, regulates the
tone of the programs vecelved In
accordance with tho taste of the
listener.
"This new development, which
truly merits the title of 'radio's
newest miracle,' is a triumph for
the Philco staff of engineers," Mr.
Wit ham explains. "Known as
Tone Control, an exclusive feat
ure to be found only on Philco
radios, It enables the llstener-ln for
the first time in radio history to
adjust the tone of tho program
he la hearing. Ho has only to
turn a knob nnd the device com
pensates for differences In the
quality of tono broadcast from dif
ferent stations, and for differences
in sensitivity In the human ear.
A turn of the knob gives him in
stantly ny one of four different
tone qualities: Hrilltant tone, bright
tone, mellow tono and deep tono.
"The tones of various broadcast- 1
ing stations vary considerably. On
some stations the circuits arc so
operated that high notes are over-;
emphasized, and tho low notes at!
the opposite end of the scale are
suppressed. All of this is reme-!
died by turning the knob of the
Philco tone control to deep, which
automatically balances the bass
and treble. Similarly, turning the
dial to deep, subdues amazing in-,
tcrference noises from outside
causes.
"Furthermore, this new engin
eering achievement adds materially
to tho enjoyment of radio, for the
average liHtener-ln will enjoy the
feeling of regulating tho tone of
his Instrument to suit himself."
This new device has been made
standard equipment of all Philco
radios, and will he on display soon
at the Wltham Supor Service Sta
tion. Mr. Wltham returned Mon
day from San Francisco where ho
attended the radio show.''
