A VKUY remarkable mail wuh Sir Arthur, and an exeeptiou

in sports (Sir Arthur was a crack golfer and the best amateur

the characters of the two men, the similarity abruptly ends.
Lord Halfour was not only versatile, but profound. Doyle was
versatile, but never profound, lialfour was the j olitical genius
who could play with equal skill the. game of practical politics,
and the art of slalcsmanship ; Doyle could do nothing in either
department. Balfour was essentially the cynical realist with
the saving grace of humor; Doyle was essentially t ho optimistic

answer, was to produce a spirit photograph, made possible by

but how many tourists pass by, up and down the Pacific
Highway, and know' nothing about it? '
At the risk of being classed as a crank on the subject,
for we have stressed this point ever since the new water system
was established, we again maintain, that in refusing to cap
italize this uniipie asset, Medford is losing one of the best
publicity bels sho bus,
At comparatively small expense, ornamental drinking foun
tains and rest, rooms could' be established at the north and
Houth entrances to the city. That such stations would be ap
preciated and extensively used by the tourists js cerlain.
Hut more important, under such eircumstauces, the world
would know of .Medl'ord's water, whereas now, only those know
who happen to make this city a stopping point.
Such slut ions would benefit every resident of Medford, and
every business. As no public beiiefaclor has appeared to erect
them as a Viunnumcut," we. believe the expense of erecting
them, could with perfect propriety bo distributed on the tax
roll.

How tho Hum of $125,000,000 for

I Ah, but childlren must play, and

and such nasty subjects goes.
The economist does not say, but
1 bellevo that n good thick slice
of the iHigest item, tho $S55,000,
1 000 for hospitals and clinics goes
I for quackery, (oo. Certainly a lot
of It goes for unnecessary luxuries.
Iteed ltoekwood, 1. I)., reported
in 102S that the average cost of a
chemical test of the blood was
$1.20 In n largo hospital, and II.
M. Fleinbntt. .M. !.. reported In
1!I2;1 the results in 2.000 such rou-
jtinc analyses of (he blood of pat
j louts admitted to n hospilnl. That
I means that every patient entering
tlio hospital miiHt be given a blood
test, ahd in thiH particular instance
the 2,000 tests brought to light the
interesting scientific fact that M
of the patientH had more atifiar in
their blood than we doctors con
sider normal. And by jingo; sure
enough, no less than 34 of the pat
fents who showed high blood sugar
actuully had diabetes. But in all
or nearly all cases the patients or
their doctors already knew they
had diabetes. So the hospital made
1,900 blood tests in order to dis
cover 47 non-diabetic persons with
$2,280 worth of interesting but
high blood sugar. One might say
useless information.
This machine practice is a great
evil of modern medicine, it Is one
of the reasons why. I have no use

attached thereto.
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Sussex vs. San Diego f .
I would very much like to have

the best results from. We are iq pur

Hemophilia
Recently an illness brought ' to
light that my husband's family are"
"bleeders." Is there any Way or
determining whether my husband
is also one? If he is, will our
children inherit it? Is there no
method of eradicating it from
future generations? (Mrs. K. C.
H.)
Answer. It Is la constitutional
deficiency, occurring in families,
the males of which may be bleed
ers but do not transmit tlie defect
to offspring, but the females,' us
ually not themselves bleeders, nev
ertheless transmit tho defect ' to
off-spring. This is not a hard and
fast rule; now and then a female
"bleeder" is encountered or a male
who is not a bleeder apparently
transmits the defect. If your Iiuh-
band Is a bleeder he probably
knows it from experience. , The
only direct test Is of course tlie

operations. Pure blood , serum
