man one would guess from lnt!
mate acquaintance as bearing that
namo was "Uncle". John Hart. ..He
vns, many years ago. the champion
blacksmith of the town. , Over the
dqor of his shop, wo recall, w.as a
sign conveying the information
"Horses Shoed Here." Another slun
imparted the Intelligence: "Ploughs
Sharped Here." And Uncle John
did not limit his trade to shoeing
horses and sharpening plows. In
our early school days we frequent
ly held street debates on the ques
tion of whether Undo John had
spelled correctly the sign: ' "Wag
gons Mendded." Indeed, many of us
learned how to spell plow and
wagon because We first learned
that they were misspelled on Uncle
John's blacksmith signs.
Of course, we never, were quite
sure that Uncle John Hart was re
sponsible for the handiwork of the
signs. The painting was done by
tho town's pli'neor sign , painter.
Keemle" Cage, who operated a
paint shop nnd In highly decorated
letters on the windows of the shop
informed the people that his work
was "Artlstacaly Done hen Re
quired." When work was not re
quired' to be "artlstacaly" done the
presumption is that Keemle Gage
was not so particular. And Uncle
John Hart was not an artist. Pos
sibly he allowed Keemle Cage to
paint tho signs without having the
copy edited, and let It go at that.
Htlll. looking back now to our
youthful acquaintance with the Old
Homo Town blacksmith, .we doubt
if he could so much as read the
simplest. nd plainest of Kngllsh
He had little time for anything of
that kind, goodness knows, and wo
never saw him reifeding a paper
And Ihe other surprise to us In
reading tho obituary In tho Old
Homo paper was that Uncle John
Hart was only 1 I years old when
he died. It seems to us now that he
must have been as old as 90 as
far back as the late '70s and the
early '80s. We recall at one time
In the Intermediate room of the old
school, when sweet little V'lrgle
.Ie, the teacher, was attempting
to onllghtcn us concerning Santa
Clous, that . Sherman Irish wr.s
deeply doused into humiliation
when he asked If Santa Claus was
as old as Uncle John Hart. Wo
gave Sherman the merry laugh, hut
wo all reflected at the same time
that Uncle John DID have long,
white whiskers.
But there In the old shop, where
horses wero "shoed" and "ploughs
sharped" and "waggons mendded. V
I'nclo John Hart hammered out i f
Iron and steel and wood a living for
himself and "Aunt I.issy." his wife
and his son. Fremont, and his
daughter, Kmbella. And he gave to
the Methodist church his dues for
current expenses nnd for the
preacher nnd for the missionary
fund and for the benevolent funds
and for religious education and for
the poor. And In addition to all
that he was able to raise a large
sum to keep his son, Fremont, out
of the penitentiary, for Fremont
was one of the had boys of the Old
Home Town. Aunt Hetty (irccn was

It cost Uncle John $2,000 to save
Fremont from punishment. That

The liberal lender declared the
peace of the world depended on
the cn-operatlon of Croat Britain
nnd the United States.
"Peace is by no means secure,"
he mild. "In unite of treaties,
man has not given up the Idea or
war. Preparations for war are
going on In every country of the
world. There are more men train
ed for war In Europe, Asia and
America than before tho great ca
tastrophe of, 1914." '
Lloyd Ceorge said except for
countries like Cermany that were
forced to reduce armaments, ureal
Britain was tho only country that
had diminished Us forces to a
point where they were at least, no
more than before tho war.
Continuing, he said: "We have
no covenants iigalnst war; we
have pacts we have all elgned
that there shall he no more wnr.
and we are spending more pre
paring for things wo have de
termined should never happen
again.
"if a drunkard signs n pledge
ho will take no more drinks, nnd
rmi heard he was filling up his
cellars with the choicest and most
expensive wines, nnd that he was
occasionally taking a nip to tartn
them, you would know ho was
preparing for another spree.
"This is the case of armaments
