The liifiirmal atmosphere soon
made Mary Lou feel quite al home,
ni'ii-li to hoi surprise. Her ner-.-ju.sross
disappeared as' Mis3 Pitts
served lunch. 1
'1 suppose you and Tony see a
rest deal or each other In town,"
Miss Tltherlnston said, as the first
:ulirse was 'leiug cleared away.
"Dr., yes, Mary Lou and 1 are
ii'oat pals." Tony answered for her.
'Playtime pals. Dancing together,
irt.es together, you know."
Was It Mary Lou's Imagination,
i had he deliberately stressed tbe
irds' "playtime pals?" Miss Titli
iriiiton appeared to notice It, too.
"I hear this season is fairly Jolly
in town."
"It Is,"1 said Tony.
"Not hair as Jolly, I'm sure, as
the seasons used to be In India be
fore tho war," Mrs. Fawsett began.
Miss Tltberlngton looked de
uressed. "You must bring Mary Lou down
for a Week-end," she Interrupted,
addressing Tony.
"Great," he said. "I'll do It."
"Illtve 'you taken Mary Lou up
vet;"
"NJt yet," said Tony. "I'm go
ing to ask her to co up with me
idiiie day next week."
Mary Lou's eyes shone excitedly,
i Oh, I'd love to go' up. Will you
' enlly lake me, Tony?"
... ; ','Sure," Tony" told her.
"Well, you can hav'e your nights,"
mid Miss Tltherlnston. "Nothing
would induce me to go up In one
if those abominable contraptions."
She reached for a little Swiss
juw-uell and rang it sharply.
"You can cloar away," she said
.o Miss IT.'.s. Then to Mary Lou,
Oniric along with me. I'll take you
round and show you tbe garden."
Miss Tltherlngtoil talked volubly
in gardening matters and seemed
.leased with Mary Lou's Intolll
tent comments. ' Some time Inter.
as they stood In ,one of the hot
nouses. Inspecting some tomatoes.
Cony's aunt remarked suddenly:
"Till me. child, are you ploying
jboul with my nephew, or are you
terlously fond of him?"
Mary Lou wished Miss Titherlng
uij wouldn't Insist on asking such
embarrassing questions. What was
nor Idea, anyway?
"W why; I I'm rond ot Tony,
surely," Blie stammered.
Miss Tlthenngton nodded.
"That's what I wanted tii know
I've always been fond of him my
self, yet I can't understand any
slrl'a wanting to marry him. But
then." she chuckled, "I don't sup
jiae we ever can understand why
anyone should want to marry our
relatives."
Ills aunt's disposition was so
i'.'nlnl at lea lime that Tony de
elded to' broach the. subject ot his
contemplated Might aa soon as pos
sible. There was an opportunity
when Mrs. Knwsett lured Mary Lou
upHtalrs to see a collection of In
dlan brass ornaments. : ' 1
"Look here, Aunt lithelberta," he
egan. "I'm dead keen lo start
preparations for that (light around
til. world. Kemeinuor, I told you
about It some time ago?""
"I remember." Miss Tlthcrlng
ton's mouth shut Ilka a trap. '
Tony coughed nervously.
"And or I I'd be most awfully
grateful If you would help me
out "
"Help you out? What can 1 do?
I'm no mechanic What are you
driving at?"
"It It's about the expense," he
began again, this time more dlf--lently.
' '
"Well, why on earth didn't you
say so In the first place?" snapped
Miss Tltlierlnglon.
Tony swallowed twlco In an ef
fort to get control of hlmielf.
"I was only trying to be tactful,
you see." " '" ' ' 1
"Tut, tut I have no time for tnri

again soon. Here's ynur answer

Tony could only stare at her
He never had expected any such
stipulation as this. Had his auni
gono completely out of her mini!''
Vital had his engagement to do
wllh the tlight, anyway?
"My engagement!" he said wens
I. "Hut you know that I've nevei
thought of getting engaged!"'
"Well, If you haven't thought ol
It, I've done t for yon. I say again
th .'. from tho day your cngagemoni

That'a settled. Do you undiM
stand?"
His clgaret was hurtling Tony'y
I' igers, but ho didn't notice It.
"My engagement lo whom?" hf
asked.
His aunt gave hitr. a contemplu
jus look.
"To tills new girl, Alary l.on
or course. She's a nice girl, sen
siblo and unspoiled. You're luck.
-.0 get her. She'll make yuu n
capital wife." She raised a ham)
when Tony started lo speak.
"No, I won't hear a word ol
protest. You've played around loo
long. It's high time you settled
down to become a useful citizen
Unless you persuade Mary Lou to
become engaged to you, there'll he
no (light as far as I'm concerned
Mv mind Is made up."
With that she stalked Impressive
ly out of Hie room. Tony know
only too well ot bis aunt's stub
hornness.
Ho was moody and silent as he
drove Mary Lou homeward. The
day had started out well enough,
but now he Celt that ho was in the
devil's own mess.
Mary Lou had Impressed Aunt
Etholberta. There was no doubt
ot that. - And she had Insisted that
he become engaged to the girl!
Tony had brought Mary Lou down
to prove to his aunt Hint he knew
at least one nice girl, but he never
lirul Intended her to think that he
was serious. Hadn't he told her a
dozen times Hint he had no Inten
tion of marrying?
He had tried to arguo with her,
but lo no avail,
"It's all nonsnnso," ho had said
dually. "Mary Lou would laugh
at the more suggestion."
"Ask lior and see," hnd been
N'lsa Tllborlngton's retort. "My
mind's made up, 1 tell you."
1 Tony knew from past experience
or his aunt's disposition. Once she
had an Idea In her head, It was
worse than futile to oppose her
wishes. '
Wbut was he to do?
On the one hand wns his fixed
determination never to marry any
gn.. Long ago Tony had prom
ised himself never to become bur
doncd with nny domosllo rospon
slbllillcs.
And on tho other hand, unless
Mary Lou would consent lo tie
come engaged to him, hp must give
up all hopes nt his flight If Aunt
Ktholbcrin didn't finance the flight,
his most cherished dream would he
shnttored. :Thnt wns unthlnknhla
The flight mennt more to him than
anything In the world more than
i hundred Mary Lous. '
Tony knew that Mary liu would
understand how eagoi ho was to
make the flight nftur planning on
it for so long. It only sho would
consent to become engaged to him
femnorarili say until the Hlghl
was' completed everything would
be find-' ' 1 " '
Thnt would fulfill his aunt's In
sane stipulation, and surely (here
could he no harm In II. so long ns
Mary Lou understood perfectly that
he was not serious.
Of course there was Mary Lnu
herself lo ho conRldcrrd, hut he
didn't' see why she should ohJerL
She would have all the run or an
engagement, without Hie drond nt
matrimony.' RcrUIcs, she was
young, and probably sho didn't
want to get married tor ynnrs, any
way. All she seemed lo want now
wns a good time.
Tony glanced over at Mary lnu.
who was curled up like a content
ed kitten bcsldo him In llio scat.
Ild bad to admit that she looked
pretty there In the twilight. "
But, hellthat wasn't solving his
problem. Jlow was he to appronch
this business of arrnnglng an en
gagement that wouldn't be nn en
gagement at all except for out
ward appearances?
Tho moro ho thought about It,
the more Tony became convinced
that there was only one way to
handle the situation. At best It
would bo a delicate matter, but It
had to be settled sometime.
Why not put it up to Mary Lou
herself?
(Comright, list, Uniief (Jrctn)
Watch for Mary Lou's reaction
to Tony's unique proposal in to
morrow's chapter.
