LABOR SURPLUS HERE
With the apple and pear thin
ning practically over, there Is a
large labor surplus in Mod ford,
according to Chris Gottlieb, man
ager of the local branch of tho
United State free employment
bureau. He said today there nre
at least five applicants for every
available job.
However, a big percentage of the
applicants are transients passing
through Med ford nnd southern
Oregon. Many of them nre un
skilled laborers nnd some claim
they have been attempting to find
work for weeks nnd months.
Local beauties nre urged to face
the camera soon, Jean Hrault, chulr-
man of the Lions club committee,
sponsoring the Miss Medford con
test, stated this morning. Some
contestants tor the title have al
ready called at the Shahgle studio
and hud their photographs taken.
Twenty-fivo have entered the com
petition and nil are urged to make
appointments at the studio not
later than tomorrow afternoon. The
girls will not he charged for the
photographs and bathing suits tor
the pictures will be furnished by
J. C. Penney Co.
Preparations for the dance to he
held at Oriental Gardens June 2S
as the grand linule of the contest
are progressing rapidly. Arrange
ments are under way tor the hold
ing of a stylo show prior la the
dance In which the girls will be
introduced to the public. One of
them will represent the city nt
the Lions 'International convention
in Portland July 10, when Miss
Oregon will he chosen to journey
to Galveston to compete for the
title of "Miss Universe.

sent playlets and motion pictures
portraying their projects.

WAR ON EARWIGS
Date for opening of the earwig
campaign in this city hat been set
for Monday, June 23, Elmer Oat
man, announced this morning. All
bugs, who expect to survive, are
advised to hide out on that day.
Mr. Oatman, accompanied by u
small crew of men, will start the
survey of the main section of the
city Monday.
Residents will bo notified If
earwigs are found In their gar
dens nnd urged to start poisoning
Th ey will not be f o reed to kill
the insects however, as there is
no ordinance in existence which
make.H earwig poisoning compul
sory.
Mr. Oatmnn nnd assistants nre
asking for the co-operation of tho
people In the campaign to keyp
down the bugs, which have come
to be such a nuisance In northern
cities.

Humane society was commended
by Mrs. F. W. Swanton, of Port
land, state head, when she was In
Medford the past two days confer
ring with local pociety officials.
She discusRed future plans with
the officials nnd reviewed past
accomplishments.
Plans for the new dog shelter,
to be constructed on the county
fair grounds, were also viewed
by Mrs. Swanton. The specifi
cations were made free of charge
by Frank Clark nrchletct as a
pnrt of his contribution to the
work of the society in the county.

lois Miller of Los Angeles, who
sustained injuries when she faint

this city yesterday, was reported
to be In a much improved condi
tion nt the Community hospital
thl afternoon, where she Is re
ceiving trpatment.
MIvh Miller was making the trip
on the bus from Ios AngelfH en
route to Salem to vIhU relatives,
when she became III and decided
to stop In Medford for a day, she
told attendants at the ho.spital.
She started down the strct and
fainted and fell In front of the
