AIRPLANE TO AID
IN 1935 the salaried mnn on the Atlantic HCiiboard -will be look
ing forwurd to Iiis vacation just as cacrly as ho docs today.
But his vacation plans will he radically different.
At present, his time and vacation funds limit Jiim to a cer
tain well-trodden circle. If he lives in New York City, he can
o to the Adirondacks, the Maine woods, Canada or northern
Michigan not much farther in two or three weeks. His travel
ing can be done by rail, boat or his own car.
Five years from now he will be able to go to the Pacific
eoast. The trip will take little nunc of his time than the ride
to -Montreal, and will cost him little more money.
There is nothing fanciful in this picture. It is based on facts
already realized in air passenger travel in commercial plane.
These facts, extended in curves, will show such possibilities right
around the corner.
THE Two outstanding facts in commercial air travel today are
decreasing costs and increasing speeds.
If air tour had been made six months ago over the air pas
senger lines in daily operation in this country the cost would
have averaged 31 cents per mile. If the same journey were
made today the cost would average 7.8 cents per mile.
Five years from now a vacation trip from the Atlantic to the
Pacific should be within the means of the :MK man and possi
bly the $'2000 num. The air speeds will have doubled or tripled,
and the fares will have been further reduced. Nation's Business.
BEWARE
THOUSANDS of American women, troubled by the lines of
ngc in their faces, arc resorting to secretive face-lifting op
erations performed by charlatan surgeons whose work usually
leaves their patients worse off than in the beginning, often dis
figures them, and sometimes endangers their lives.
This is the charge and the warning made by an investigator
for Good Housekeeping magazine, after a study of the rapidly
growing practice of "beauty surgery" in the larger American
cities.
The investigator has found numerous cases in which women,
usually between 30 and 50, have been left with disfiguring scars
at the hair line, the eyes and under the chin by the operations
of incompetent surgeons. In some eases' important glands, such
as tho tear duets have been destroyed; in others blood poison
ing has resulted.
"Only a handful of men in America are capable of doing such
work properly," says the writer, "and not more than six are
really significant. They arc those who pioneered in plastic sur
gery during the war. They do not want lo be known as 'beauty
surgeons' and, being ethical men,
will, however, perform such
them justified. But one of these, at least,' has done most of his
work along this line in secondary operations to undo the daiu
ago done by women who have gone secretly to quacks."

of the operation even from their families. These, it is pointed

services through subtle advertising, or is rccoinnrfudcd by con
niving beauty, parlor operators and others.
''They do not realizo that the real cause of their facial let
down is probably much deeper than the surface," says the writer
in the current issue of tho magazine. "Usually it is functional
or nervous, and the ethical doctor sees the need of curing the
underlying causes of her sagging skin, 'llie quack cares noth
ing for this aspect of the matter, He knows only that the patient
wants to look younger and has the money to pay for an opera
tion. .....-
The commonest disappointment to follow such an operation
is that the face quickly falls again into 'baggy folds, and often
this is accompanied by tho pulling away of the stretched skin
from tho excisions, leaving a
filled by ugly scar tissue. .

FIIAILS MAY FIX II SERMONS I.V SCONES AND

This way from normal, peoplo

that way thus:
Slender, slim,

treat those at f,all

There are two
types of frails, and
we do n't mean
slims. First, poor
things thut are just dying to gain
a little flesh but can't make any
headway because somehow they
nover have enough nppetlte and
so they can eut only so much and
they are through. Hecond, tho un
happy ones who have astonishingly
large appetites and aro always eat
ing but nevertheless remain always
painfully lean and hungry-looking.
1 often wonder which of the two
I'd rather be if I had to be one,
and I think I'd rather be the other.
The first type, poor wights,
veritablo walking skeletons, with
birdliko appetites, forover seeking
a good tonic or something, never
accumulating an extra pound for
more than a week or two , sel

be better for them If they did.
The socond typo of frail, with
tho appetite of a whale and the
build of a shad, includes a consid
erable number of individuals who
are really In the Incipient stage of
diabetes. I do not mean to suggost
tha every skinny or emaciated per
son who cats a great deal yet falls

to have diabetes. I believe only
a minority of such persons do de
velop frank diabetes. But I do
say they're in line for diabetes, In
training for It, and for that reason
they should receive with good
grace tho suggestion I am giving
today.
In both types, no matter wheth

ment is distinctly "Indicated," as
doctors say. It will give the first
type of frail the benefit of some
of the enurmous quantities of food
consumed. It will give the other
type of frail a more nearly normal'
uppetitu or desire for good food to
build up flesh and bodily vigor.
Do not take the refusal of the
fli-Ht doctor you consult about this
treatment too seriously. If your
doctor is not informed about the
propriety and the benefits of Insu
lin treatment merely to help frail
folk gain weight, try another or as
many others as necessary till you
find ono who is up to date. Of
course you must go to the doctor
to receive Insulin you can't safely
use such a remedy without medical
instruction and supervision. From
one to three doses a day may be
used, over a period of several
weeks. Kach dose la injected hy
podcrmlcally. The doctor cun teach
an intelligent patient to administer
his own Insulin. Tho effect of
each dose is immediate and of only
a few hours duration It must 'be
Injected at or near the mealtime
and it la effective only for enabling
the body to utilize or get the
benefit from the food consumed at
that meal.
Don't give up hope, my - dear
frails, until you have had a go at
this Insulin treatment. It Is really
so very good that I am contemplat
ing the opening of a clinic for the
administration of insulin to non
diabetic patients, and advertising
brand new flesh at, say, $6.78 a
pound. - .- .-. - ''' .

THE VISITOR'S RETURN
By Mary Gralinin Bonner.
John nnd (Peggy had met the
East Wind and her Rainy Weather
companion, and now they were
having a great deal of fun playing
In their muddy yard.
They told tho Little Black Clock
about it. "Coma
with me, a few
hours ahead of
time," he said,
"and we'll see the
visitor going back
home."
"You mean tho
East Wind is go

John asked. '
"Just what I
mean,' said thrj
Little Black
Clock.
They walked
along with h i m
and soon they
saw someone who looked very
windy In his costume, too.
But ho did not look as though
he cared about walking in the rain.
Tn fact he looked as though h
liked dry and sunny weather best
of all.
"He's" a member of the family."
tho iLittle Black Clock explained.
"In fact he is a brother of East
Wind. His name Is West Wind,
and he is on his way to tell thj
East Wind to go back home now,
because he wants to pay our part
of the world a' visit."
So tho Little Block Clock nnd
John - and Peggy saw the West
Wind como stnlklng along, taking
great, hugo steps : as he walked,
and with a manner about him that
showed ho thought he Was strong
and that ho would havo his own
way.
East Wifcd was playing with her
Rainy Weather Companion. Now
the West Wind didn't caro for that
Itainy Weather Companion.
He didnt' see why his sister lik

until he drove her nway.
Then tho East Wind decided she
would follow her companion and
perhaps they could go somewhere
else to play.
