Schorer orchard noar Tolo, were

farmers and orchnrdlstH as attend
ed the first one, held a month ago.
Fifty were at the morning meet
ing, and sixty-five ut the afternoon
tests. ... . r
, After June 30, the drainage and
irrigation work of the valley will
he conducted, with federal funds.
$5000 is available from an appro
priation by congress. The amount
was originally 9)0,000, but was
swatted by the economy ax. It is
thought that sufficient funds will
he available for a thorough con
duct of the work.
No deWnlte program has been
mapped out for the 1930-31 study,
hut it will include the extension of
the present research, and enlarge
ment of its scope.
Irrigation, in all Its phases, wilt
he studied, and from time to time
orchard ists and landowners will be
advised as to the uses and abuses,
if any, of irrigation waters in these
parts. The irrigation ditches will
also, bo .probed to determine their
weaknesses, If any.
Last spring, as an educational
pointer, water users were request
ed to keep ditches free of muterlal
apt to result in seepage, and the
advice .has been followed to a large
extent. . v .

lows: Some rain fell In northwestern
counties early in tho week, and
later there were a taw widely scat
tered thunderxhowcrs, but there
was little Interference with farm
work on account of rain.
Cereals: Winter wheat is most
ly headed and In tho milder sec
lions is filling. Except In some
central counties where moisture Is
scarce. It Is making good advance.
Tho warmer weather has resulted
in Improvement of corn and some
fields In the south are being culti
vated. Fruits: The height of the straw
berry season Is past In northwest
ern counties. Can fruits arc do-!
ing well but show much winter in-
Jury. Thinning of apples and pears
is in progress. Cherries aro ripen
ing in small quantities. I

Cutting of alfalfa and clover made
