cove trails, my bead and ears ware
pounding, i arrived at the beach
In a lather of sweat. 4
Not more than a dozen feet ol
wet sand divided the breakers from
the sandstone cliff. The beach
curved and I followed its arc at top
speed, coming to the mouth or The

and over the Parados cruiser and
the police boat, then along the
cement breakwater ParadoB bad
built halfway across the mouth ot
the cove. . ,
A shoulder or rock ' Jutted Into
the surf at the northwest corner or
tile cove. It took me ten minutes
to get around it to the west beach.
Once i thought I was trapped. The
water was up to my waiBt, then to
my shoulders. It swept me off my
feet and hurled me against the
cliff. The water, receded and J
staggered through.
My head throbbed and after I
had touched It 1 found blood on
my hand. The wound did not ap
pear to be deep, however, and I
started down the beach. Portunute-
ly tlie torch was not broken.
Turning. I raced back along the
boach, playing the light beam upon
the face of the cliff with a view to
discovering a trail that would take
me to the top.
The trail proved steeper than 1
had expected and halfway up I had
to stop, or I would have fallen from
exhaustion. 1 wob losing more
blood than 1 had supposed. .", ,
1 was on the point ot starting up
again when a beam of light, ,evl:
dontly from an e'ectrlc torch, shot
out over the top of, the cjlrr In a
horizontal direction a little to the
right of me.
It vanished, reappeared, vanish
ed; again It reappeared and van
ished. Each time the light flashed
with the regularity of a signal.
So far as I knew everybody had
loft the house. The women might
have returned, but If they had I
could conceive ot no reason why
they should, signal out to sea. In
land, or to me on the beach that
would have been understandablo. ,
"It looks queer," I muttered.
As I pulled myself over the edge
or the cliff, the light flashed agalu
once. A hundred yards south ol
where 1 stood was the house. The
light had seemed to come from the
parapeted root. This time I caught
an answering-, gleam somewhat
south ot the house and not far oft
shore. .
My first Impulse was to approach
the root by way of the outside stnlr,
but, I quickly , suppressed It. I
wanted to see the slgnalor before
he bow mo.
Skirting the cyprosa trees, ' I
made my way to the northwest cor
ner of the house and to the rem
door, whore I had left my shoes
The.. door .was ajar. . 1. entered,
glided across the kitchen to the
hall, and arrived noiselessly nt the
toot ot the stair.
Here I paused and listened. The
hall and most ot the lower rooms
were lighted. 1 saw no one anil
heard nothing. Nevertheless I
knew that I was not alone In the
house. My certainty sent me up
the atalr like a shadow.
At the top 1 paused -nee more
Caroline's room was lighted ami
the door was ajar. I slipped across
the corridor and looked Into the
room. It was empty.
My own room was the next and I
had stopped In front of It when my
eyos were drawn to the door at the
end of the corridor. It fascinated
mo oecause me uocnes or rnrtinoa
and Grainger wore behind It. per
haps. At any rate, I found mysell
moving toward It.
My throat was dry. I felt as It I
were moving through a tomb pro
pled with the living. The door wn
not locked. It guve slowly, noise
lessly, botore my pressure. The
room was dnrk.
Nothing happened for a moment;
t heard no sound. Then my face
suddenly wot ringed In light. My
own torch waa still In my left
hund, but 1 hod forgotten It anil
my lingera released the switch
without the consent of my will.
It parried the Mr si beam and cut
a second circle out of the darkness
11 to the second circle leaped a face
that waa of neither the llvlug not
the dead,
A icrenm rang through the room
"Allan!" S ,
The face had leaped at me. Some
