The girts sang, very sweetly,

around the grand piano. The four
lathers In ono corner, after tlia sec
ond song, went into a huddle und
came out with a belated attempt ut
applause which died a-botnin' us it

brows. Apparently applause was
not approved on a Sunday evening.
However, the ex-football stur re
fused lo be downed, and nfter every
selection thereafter bo clapped his
hands several times, his three
mates joining In after a fashion,
just from a sense of sex loyalty.
Hut if there Is anything that sounds
more futile and dispirited than four
middle-aged ineh on their haunches'
clapping their hands, fn n large
room lacked with silent girls and,
ladies we ilon't know just what It i
Is. Somehow It seemed symbolical1
of tho evening.
The vety charming and soft-j

gian. The four papas perked up1
at this,, and had visions of some
thing at last in which they could
join. Hut they apparently had forgot
ttu Norway lias alo adopted some
sort of prohibition. At any rule,
theie was nothing about "Skoal" or
"Kilt your glasses up" or "It's al
ways fair weather!"
There wasn't even a chance for
a good nasal-swlpo tenor. We don't
wish to appear disrespectful but it
sounded like a tea drinking song
afternoon tea. However, the papas
all applauded. They were disap
pointed but. as ono of them express
ed il: "Who wouid wish his daugh

That's another point. The four

TORIES
INDIANS' CODD HATIIS.
Ity Mary Giuliani Homier.
The Utile Jilack Clock -had
turned the time back and John
and.Peasy were with the Indians
1,k . when they were
the most import
ant people In. the
land.
, Not only had
tho Clock turned
the time back u
good many years,
but ho had turn
ed It back to a
winter's day and
tho Indian boys
were taking cold
baths.
John thought
he would have
liked living In
these days, but
when he saw the Indians taking
such very, very cold hut hp he was
not (p.iite so sure of it.
They jumped right into the
water which was covered with a
thin coating of ice and although
they jumped about and squealed
and yelled it did not stop them
from bathing in fliis way.
Then others gave themselves a
splendid rubbing and cleaning with
snow anil John felt that was al
most too much.
Peggy felt the same way about
It, and then to their surprise they
mw some of the older Indian
children nctually playing games
in the snow, wearing very few .
clothes.
The Little P.lack Clock, as well
as John and Peggy, admired the
sjlendld strength of tho Indian
boys that they could stand such
a great deal of cold, and they
watched them play and jump
about In the snow.
Then the Clock took them to
see somo splendid Indian chiefs
painting their faces and making
themselves' very fine for some
noble ceremonies which were to
take place, and once again John
felt that it really would he won
derful lo live all the time with
tlie Indians.
They were always doing such
interesting things painting their
faces, making wampum, dancing
so wildly nnd racing across the
Plains, and shrieking such fine
piercing shrieks!
