The bureau's report on the farm
and commodity price situation for
jii was as follows:
'J!:M I'liICK The general level
or farm prices advanced slightly
between March 15 and April 15
as a result of higher prices for
most items except wool and live
stock. Since then both crop and
livestock prices have again de

general average of farm prices
during tho first half of May was
lower than on April 15. The
present low level of farm prices
may lie compared with tho low
levels reached in the preceding de
clines, namely In June, 1921, May,
1S24 and April, 1927.

Every Building in State to
Be Appraised, As Basis
Will Take Five Years to
Do Work in Multnomah
County.
SALtiaM. Ore- May at. tVP
Acting under authority of an act
of the 1U2U legislature, which cre
ated a full time state tax com
mission, the state tax office has
launched a program to get away
from the present assessment sys
tem, which 1j termed, "baphaz
a rd " and to make an actus I a p -pra
isa 1 of all pro perty In t h u
state.
The object is to standardize as-uet-'smeuts
and equalize taxes. Am
a basis for this an official of the
state or the county will make a
personal inspection and appraisal
of
every building In tho slate.
Similarly all land and other class
es of property will bo appraised.
The start has already been
made In Multnomah, Clackamas,
Clatsop, Jackson, Klamath nnd
Wasco counties. It Is admitted
that completion of the task will
require some yearp. Tho Mult
nomah county appraisal of build
ings alone will take five years.
When this basic appraisal has
been completed all future nppruls
sls will be simple, Charles V.
Calloway, tax commissioner, said.
Tho stato tax officials will work
through the county assessors, Tho
plan is for a representative of the
state office to start tho county
men on the work, dropping back
Into the counties at intervals to
check on the operation. For
guidance In the appraisal .of
buildings, particularly residences,
n manual has been prepared. By
following It Is claimed that the
valuations placed by different ap- '
misers on the same building or
type of building will show only
plight variance.. In this manner
the present discrepancies In valu
ations will ho avoided. '
of battorles, generators and start-
Ing motors. Tho FIrostone batter- :
les will bo carried In stock. '
Skilled holp Is used In tho car
washing end of tho business and
Included fn the equipment la a

pressure from tho hydrant to 500
pounds, tearing loose every pos
sible bit of grease and grit, espe
cially from high pressure fittings
to place them In proper condition
for lubrication. The steam wash
Is also used.
The gas. and oil department
boasts of three pumps and pumps
to sell eight different brands of oil.
The gasoline Island has no posts or
other obstructions before it can ho
reached from tho street and Is In
a large motor court. Tho tiro stock
room Is of sufficient size tu take
care of a carload of tires, carrying
all sizes. '
Jt Is tho plan of tho new man
agers to offer a truo one-stop ser
vice station, and to complete the
station, a simonlzing department
will also bo a feature. Messrs.
Smith and Watkins extend a geri
erallnvltatlon to motorists to allow
them to show Just what advan

offer. During tho Opening week,
