Former Secretary Treasury
Will Fight Charges
Against Los Angeles
Evening Record.
.f'XOR ANGELES, Co I., May 21.
() Willium G. McArioo, former
Hecretary of the treasury, who has
been retained by the Los AngeleH
Evening Kecord to tight contempt
of court charges brought by the
Los Angeles liar association, today
made public the following state
ment: "The fundamental Ismie In the
contempt proceedings against the
editor and publisher of the Los An-
goles Kecord is liberty of speech
and of the presH. The California
constitution explicitly prohlblts'the
enactment of any law that will re
strain or abridge this liberty. Since
the legislature Is powerless to do
It, a tendency has developed re
cently to accomplish, through con
tempt proceedings, restraint of that
very liberty In violation of these
constitutional guarantees. Liberty
itself will be a mere shadow If,
through administrative tyranny or
any other form of censorship, the
right to freely speak, write and
publish opinion shall be compro
mised or denied. The Issue In
this case, therefore, transcends
petty political considerations, the
promptings of expediency or per
sonal ambitions and must be fought
to conclusion."
The contempt charges, which are
scheluled for a court hearing June
2, were based upon a series of edl
torial articles and cartoons criticis
ing the county grnnd Jury, the
courts and the district attorney,
concerning Us procedure in the
Julian Petroleum corporation stock
scandul case.

Warner Baxter Star
of Craterian Film
Imbued with the real spirit of
the Old West, "The Arizona Kid,"
Alfred Santell's great outdoor ro
mance in Movietone, opens at the
Fox Craterian theatre today with
the Incomparable Warner Baxter in
the title role.
To the ninny who hailed Mnxter's
gallant outlawry in "In Old Ari
zona," this new picture will come
as a joyous piece of screen rein
carnation. For Baxter again plays
the part of a reckless and amorous
bandit, whose love affairs with a
(lance-hall girl and a gambler's
wife, together with his imprudent
use of an alias to defeat the offi
cers seeking him, serve to moti
vate the swift moving nnd gor
geously photographed story.
Establishing a new record in
filming every scene of the picture
on the exact site of the story, even
to the Interior sequences, "The Ari
zona Kid" is an unusual piece of
entertainment. The splendid natural
backgrounds of Zlon National park
have been used extensively in the
production nnd an old "ghost city"
two miles from the present Rock
ville, was completely rebuilt as a
Hotting for the village scenes.
Mona Maris, the Argentine beauty
who scored so heavily in "Romance
ol the Rio Grande" opposite Baxter,
is again his leading lady in this
film, and the supporting cast is
headed by Carol Lombard and Mrs.
J inilncz.
