RUTH CHATTERTON WWJjZ
!S CONVINCING IN
''SARAH 4Nn snN'l 282.
VI Ull II I I1MU VUM
We have always regarded Uuth
ChaUerton us a great actress. But
never before ns in any sense a
beautiful woman. However. In
"Sarah and Son." at th Crater
ian last night, she seemed to this
reviewer' somewhui susceptible
eyes as really beautiful. Not all
the time. Hut at certain mo
ments. Perhaps . the character of her
role had something to. do with
It. There is a cold intellectual
quality, - a certain hardness
about Miss Chattertoiv which
heretofore, has been reHponsible
no doubt for her selecting roles
of the adventurous and non-sentimental
type.
Hut in Sarah and on, Miss
Chatterton demonstrates how a
truo artist can overcome her fa
cial registration on the screen,
by what, for want of n better
term, might be termed her spir
itual appeal. The dominant note
of her mother-love role, was a
tigerish devotion, but she softened
this and rendered it poignantly
moving, by her scones with her
stolen son, which were as fine ex-;
ample of true emotional acting,
as the present reviewer has seen j
in many a moon. . . i
Fpllowing tho example of Lib- j
erty, wo would give "Sarah and j
Son" a four-star rating. The pho-
tography is excellent, the sound :
reproduction good, the support of
Miss Chatterton could scarcely
be Improved upon, und the Intel
ligence nnd restraint shown In
the directing Ih outstanding. Aside
from the deaf and dumb boy epi
sode, which wo regarded as highly
improbable, every incident was
convincing, action was swift, the
sequencer skillfully arranged, and
more Important than all, the
baby In the case was a real baby:
and the boy. not a whipped cream
Imitation, but a real boy.
For those who insist upon comic
relief, there is a good Lloyd Ham
ilton comic on tho bill, and for
added measure, Medford, through
the eyes of a movie camera are
shown. The views of local or
chards In full bloom, are alone
worth the price of admission. '
, : -'' U. V. R.'
' ' "
Mr. and Mrs. William Hammett,
well known residents of this city,
have recovered from a severe at
tack of poisoning occasioned by
eating mushrooms. Both are able
to -be up, though somewhat pale
and weakened.
The mushrooms were of the
variety that become poisonous
after beintr soaked in water over
night. Krtehds gave the liammetts a
ha'.ch of mushrooms which they
hnd picked on the banks of Rogue
river. They cooked and ate some
themselves shortly after they were
picked, without any :::-effects. On
their way home, they left a supply
with the Hammetts.
The J la in metis ate the mush
rooms at their next meal, after
cleaning and leaving them soak in
water overnight. They became
violently nauseated and were very
111 for several hours.
Mushrooms- aro no longer n
dainty tidbit in the Hammett
household.
1 The rains of last week caused a
heavy growth of mushrooms,
which were gathered by Medford
mushroom epicureans. Including
William O'ilara and Charles l'altn.
The experience of the Hammetts
has caused a heavy decline in the
mushroom market.
