NEW YORK, Hay 5. ()
Stocks rallied violently In the last
halt hour ot trading on the New
York Slock Exchange, today, as
powerful supporting orders were
thrown into the market and hears
scampered to cover their short
commitments.
Wall Street rumors that some
of the leading bankers who acted
to stabilize the market" last fall
were planning to offer support
n regarded as a factor In the
ish W cover,, but these rumors

Closing quotations showed a fair
ly even distribution of gains and
losses, with several leading Issues
clesing higher, after having record
ed new low levels for the move
ment in a bear .drive during the
middle of the afternoon.
Trading was in hugs volume, to
tal sales running close to 8,000,000
shares, the largest day's turnover
since last November.
Price movements in some of the
more volatile Issues were spectacu
lar. Vanadium, after tumbling more
than $17 a share, regained its loss
and closed at $10, up $2. Ameri
can & Foreign Power, after drop
ping nioro than SU to a new low
for the year, regained all but $3 of
lis loss.
U. S. Steel was a leader in the
late rally, after selling down to
close to its low of the year at $166,
it rebounded to $174. Radio, after
touching a new low for the currpni,
decline below $12, closed at $47.75,

material change today. Eggs were
limply steady at the close Katurday
and butter was apparently a little
steadier following the recent de
cline. However, supplies of both
products have accumulated rapid
ly, with storage facilities taking
care of wiiieh of the surplus. De
spite this, there has been individ
ual shading of prices here and
there.

The Health Honor Hull parade
and pear festival will be held one
day this week, the first day the
weather man assures the schools
of good weather. Supt. K. 11. Hed
lick announced this morning. The
1400 children who will participate
In the events are ready and wait
ing for a sunny day. This number
constitutes 88 percent of all chil
dren registered In the Junior high
school and elementary grades.
This Is the highest percentage of
pupils ever reported on the Health
Honor Roll in Medford.
The time of the parade will be
announced at least 24 hours In
advance through the schools and
newspapers and will be broadcast
from the Mail Tribune-Virgin
Radio station.
