PENNEY EMPLOYES TO
GET BONUS TONIGHT
For the employes of th eJ. C.
Penney store, Christmas will be
more than a happy event, as bonus
checks, ranging from $HG to $130
were to be distributed this evening
to clerks in recognition of their
service and the amount of their
sales. An interesting fact of the
Penney stores, Manager William
Bolger said this afternoon, was
that employes are never "docked"
for loss of time caused by sick
ness. Jt was not long ago when
the store paid wages of a clerk for
35 days while she was sick, and
sent her flowers ever other day.
A Christmas service will be con
ducted at the English Lutheran
church nt 7 p. m, on Christmas day.
The pnstor will give one of the
moat beautiful of the Christmas le

school will render a Christmas pro

; In accordance with their annual

! Rotary club held a special Christ
J mas program today in honoifc of
j the old gentlemen of the county
j home. The program which was in
Jcharge of a committee headed by
I Fred Heath, Sr., opened with up

mixed quartet of the Presbyterian
church. Three beautiful Christmas
carols were rendered by the quar

ence McKlhose. Mrs. Edna Isaacs,
Dr. W. W. Howard and Mr. Mac-
Donough, with Mrs. 11. E. Marsh
as accompanist. Other musical
numbers were group singing by
the club and impromptu solos by
chas. Clay, Wm. Allen and Herb
Alfofd.
A splendid Christmas address by
Rev. Wm. IJ. Hamilton, former
Holaria n was grea t ly a pprecia ted
by all present. Hev. Hamilton
spoke of Christmas Day being the
birthday of a "gambler," not the
type of gambler, however, that one
usually thinks of but the type of
man who stakes his all In an en
deavor to attain a high Ideal. He
went on to cite cases of "gamblers"
of this type, men such as Colum"
bus whn he set out on what was
deemed a hopeless mission, the
Wright Bros., who risked life and
limb to conquer the air and Thos.
A. Edison who tolled , day and
night and spent a fortune to invent
the electric light and other mar
velous things to benefit mankind.
The greatest of all men who
toiled unceasingly and made end
less sacrifices for his fellow man
was He whose birthday we honor
tomorrow, stated the speaker. He
gave unstintingly and gambled
everything he had even ;to his last
stake his life in order that He
might relieve human suffering and
leave the world a better place in
which to live and against great
odds won.
Following Rev. H a m 1 1 t o n's
Christmas message Santa Clause,
impersonated by Kcl. Shock ley,
distributed Christmas packages to
the seven old gentlemen present as
honor guests und extended Yule
tide greetings in behalf of the Ro
tary club.
President 'Frank Newman ad
vised the members that a telegram
of condolence had been forwarded
to the family of Gov. Patterson
who was a prominent Rotarian of
Oregon. He also read a letter of
Christmas greetings to Wm. Ly
man, well known veteran member
of the looal club and a wire to Dr.
Sweeney, both of whom are con
valescing from recent illness. FoU
lowing tho meeting the elderly
guests were- escorted to their
homes by local Rotarians.

Chiistmas means more to me
Than a tree.
Or merry feast ings on
