NEW RAILROAD
PASSKN'tlKK TKAIN'.S are now running on the most amazing

the wheat and the people of Western Canada to Fort Churchill,
the trading post on the western shore of HNidsoii liny which is
to become the port of the northernmost and shortest route from

.Some competent geologists, explains Cooper, hold that the
entire region is still on the southern boundary of the great gla
cier which began withdrawing from (lie middle western Tinted
States thousands of yenrs ago. Tho indisputable fact is that
tho thin soil and its straggly growth of moss and other vegeta
tion is merely a layer beneath which lies great impenetrable
sheets of ancient blue ice.
''.
rpnU most remarkable phase of the achievement is that most
I- of the work has been done in winter, with the ther
mometer registering -JO to 00 degrees below zero. For the solid
iceinust he preserved and to dig and blast away the tough insu
lating covering of moss, soil and rock in warm weather would
immediately expose the ice to melting.
Therefore, the digging and blasting is done in Ihe eoldest,
weather. Ditches are dug lo drain still frozen lakes and a tem
porary track is laid along the solidly frozen ground. At, the
first breath of spring when the gravel pits begin lo llmw there
is another frenzy of activity 'to bring up this material. Six solid
feet of it arc hurled into the blasted trench to ballast the rails
and to serve as it permanent insulating material for the iee bed.
On (his the rails are finally laid. '

"I've turned the time ahead th'.i

ride in an airplane.
"To bo sure, airplanes were pop

Peggy could hardly believe that
the buildings were real. They al
most seemed to her to be like a
kind of fairyland, with towers
reaching way up Into the clouds.
The traffic In tho air was very
heavy, and the funniest thing was
that people blew horns to sho v
that they were passing others, Just
as In the old days pcoplo blew auto
mobile horns.
"What I wanted you to hear par
ticularly was the horn on this
plane." the IJttlc Black Clock said,
and they listened while the pilot
from lime to time blew his horn.
"It sounds like the. wind whis
tling." John said.
"Good guess," said the Little
niack Clock. "This horn is call-M
the 'wind whistle horn.' It makes
a sound very much like the wind
whistling, nnd can bo heard very
well. Ilcsldcs, it has a deep blow
ing noise like a horn, too, so it's
the ideal kind to have on a plane."
How quickly everybody flew
through the air!
"IVople nre In such n rush these
days." the Little Iilack Clock said.
"That was what my father said
when we used to go riding in tho
car." John remarked.
