It is estimated that there is now
at least ts lo S feet of snow at tho
rim of (.'rater lake, four, feet at
Anna Spring camp, and three feet
at trie K!:imuih and Medford en
trances to Crater National park.
No word could be received from
iq park today, as Hanger Ft. H.
Jteck and .Mrs. Keck arrived In the
city from the park last evening,
and no one is there now except the
caretaker of the lodge.
Air. and Mrs. Heck had great
difficulty leaving the park be
cause of the snow, and passed thru
quite an experience in so doing
It taking them nearly all day Man
da to get to Ft. Klamath.
On receiving telephonic word at
Anna . Spring camp from W. ('.
(Jodfrey. chief ranger, at 8 a. nt.
Monday to close the park at once,
Mr. and Mrs. Beck started in their
car for the west, or Medford en
trance. Intending to stop there for
a day or so, and then come on to
their home In this city.
They could only get about 1 00
yards away because (he eight
inches of wet snow piled up in
front of the wheels and stalled the
car. They then returned to Anna
Spring camp and after Ranger
Heck had drained and disconnect
ed all the water pipes and attended
to some other details by 11a. ni..
In order to leave the national park
u n en red f o r d u ri n g the wi n t e r
season, they started to go out over
the snow by the south, or Kort
Klamath entrance.
The progress was slow, both nn
account of the snow nnd the fact
that several big trees were down
across the road between Anna
Spring camp and the Clarden of
the (iods. It took them from 11
a. m. to 2 :Ho p. in. to reach the
tiarden of the Gods, one and one
fourth miles distant being able to
make only four or five feet at a
time because the wet snow piling
up In front and stopping them.
Finding that they were - ma
rooned and could not get out of
the park without help, Mr. and
Mi's. lieck returned to Anna
Spring camp and phoned from
there to the garage at Fori Klam
ath for assistance, and then pro
ceeded back to the Garden of the
Gods, to wait for this help, In the
shape of a 10-ton truck nnd driver,
to arrive. Tho truck started from
'Fort Klamath at 3:30 p. m., but
did not arrive ut the Garden of the
Clods until 7 p. ni. because of
encountering several trees down
across the road between the south
park boundary and tho tiarden of
the Gods.
As soon as the truck arrived the
Heck: car was hyoked,to Its ireyy
by a chain, :nnd the rescueTl and
rescuer started for Ft. Klamath,
reaching there at 9:45 o'clock
Monday night.
Tuesday morning Ranger Beck
sta rted to ma ke a trip back to
Anna Spring camp to take the
depth of snow there, but could
only get as far as the old aban
doned Hawmlli, two and one-fourth
miles distant, where the snow was
12 feet deep, lie then returned to
Fort Klamath and he and -Mrs.
Reck then camo on, back to Med
ford.
