the Fruit Growers league, since the

is planned to hold another meeting

LIGHTING PLANS
A meeting of the advertising
committee of the Med ford Cham
her of Commerce will be held
early this weeli to perfect final
plans for Medford's second annual
outdoor Chrlstmus lighting con
test. Last year's contest attracted
a great deal of "favorable atten
tion to this city and thousands of
visitors viewed the beautiful holi
day exhibits throughout the resi
dence section. Several new plans
ore being considered fr this year,
full details of which will bo an
nounced in the near future.

BEND BLAST REVEALS
HIBERNATING SNAKES
BEND, Ore,, Dec. 7. (VP) A blast
of dynamite which blew away f
side of a cliff on the Ochoho high
way near Mitchell today revealed
several groups of snakes, coiled In
bundles, and all dormant.
Some of the bundles contained
both bull rtnd water , snakes, but
the rattlesnake bundles' contained
only that'speeles.
Whether or not the eighth
grader knows more about ' soap
ond its uses than do-other chil
dren, ranging from, 11 to 14 years
old in Medford,. cannot be proved.
Kvidence that they know consid
erable and are not afraid to ex
press themselves, is found In the
three prixe-winnlng essays on
"Soap and Why AVe Lse- It," won
by three 81? students In tho Junior
high school.
The contest, sponsored hy tho
makers - of White King and Mis
sion It1!! soaps, was nniwunced
here 10 days ago at the Junior
high, hut was not ' carried on in
connection with school work.
Those who competed for the three
prizes, offered by Mrs. Bertha
Dermody of Portland, advertising
manager of the home service de
partment of the Los Angeles Soap
Co., who has spent the past few
days in Med ford in the interest of
the contest, did so voluntarily,
tho work being done nt home.

original compositions of Medford
youngsters over KM ED, the Mall
Tribune-Virgin station this morn
ing, Mrs. Dermody announced the
three winners as follows: Arllne
Oossott, .first prize of $5.00 In
rash; Maurice Sample, second
prizp of $2.r0: and Maurice Clark,
third prize, consisting of a box of
fine assorted soaps.
The first prize winner Is print
ed on the woman's page of this
paper today. The other two will
he printed later.

served Tuesday noon. In the large
dining room of the Christian
church. It was sponsored by the
losing Side of a readingcontest,
in the Missionary society. Theob
ject of the contest was to get the
missionary Information to the
members of tho society.
The. dining room was beautifully
decorated with greens, nnd chrys
anthemums, nnd small tables were
used to seat tho forty guests pres
ent. The table decorations were
in keeping with the- approaching
holiday season. Tall rod candles
sprigs of holly and red nut bask
ets being used to adorn - each
table.
Toasts nnd speeches were fin
joyed while seated at the tables.
After tho luncheon, the regular
monthly missionary meeting was
held In tho lecture room. The
business period presided over by
tho president, Mrs. U. L. Ray. The
worship period was conducted by
Mrs. O. M. Hon, assisted by Mrs.
