This weeks seems to have been "Have a Contest Week" in the commercial department. Three dif ferent contests have been afoot. Tuesday morning the advanced typewriting class began a race, to Now York City.' ' The rate of travel cacti day- is based on. the gross number of words 'written during a ten minute speed tes't with a hand icap or 10 miles for each error made or'1 "accident" tncouritorod. Thethird day out Dorothy Smith whs reported to be nearing Oinaba, having a Veruged 500 miles n day. Howard Shyder Was close behind, averaging 450 miles a day. Due to illness Gerald Morris ttas delayed a day' and was last seen crossing tle: Ol-Ogon line, headed for Sacra mento. We hope the class will reach Itfc destination by Christmas and. return. In time for semester exams. Tho beginning classes In typing have had one and two minute ac curacy tests each day this week. A large target has been placed In the typing room and students writing without errors have their names placed on arrows In the "bull's eye." Thos writing with one error arc placed in the first circle, etc. We are anxious to sec which student gets his nrrow in tho hull's eye oftenest during ten contests. This is also a contest between the three beginning classes to -determine which class has the highest percentage of accuracy. Thursday and Kridny the typing II cluss had a peanut race. Each member was given 20 peanuts and for every error or inaccuracy he was penalized one peanut. On Fri day Inacurrato typists again con tributed peanuts to the "pot" and the student having the highest per centage of accuracy received the "pot." Louise Elliott, having a 95 percent nccuracy paper carried away u large hag of peanuts. Girls' league Wednesday afternoon the Girls League council met to discuss plans for prc-hollday activities. They brought up the question of filling Christmas boxes for needy families and a plan for rnlstng money to meet the expense of hav ing the Girls' League picture In the annual. t At a meeting of nil tho girls on Thursday, they voted en thusiastically to fill three or four Christinas lmxts with food, cloth ing und gifm and to have a food sale down town on Saturday, Dec. On- the afternoon of Dec. 18th a Christmas tea will be given 'for all the girls. A program of Christ mas carols and stories Is being ar ranged. Exceptionally good upeed records have been made by some of the. beginning typing students. Iist week Henrietta Hugger wrote 25 words per minute, Bessie Milton 29 words per minute, and John Kddy wrote 24 words per minute. This record was mndc on a five minuta speed tent and with 100 percent accuracy. This week Bessie Milton made 32 words per minute and John Kddy 27 words per minute.
