Jackson County Pioneer Says
Modern Children Lack Freedom
"The young folks of today
couldn't be much worse than they
are but it Isn't their fault. They
haven't enough freedom." This
interesting and rather different
opinion was expressed by J'eff
Hamlin, 7f year old Jackson coun
ty resident, who Is still operating
the farm upon which he was born,
two miles south of Medford.
The pioneer resident, who used
to walk foul miles to school In ft
blinding storm, after his several
hours of early morning chores
were done to master his throe Us
until four in the afternoon, then
walk home to many more hours of
heavy farm work does not envy the
younger generation. In spite of the
apparent ease with which they
live'. 4
"When we went to n dunce In
the old days, it was an all night
blowout. And if we wanted to
keep it up until five o'clock in the
morning, that was our business,"
he said. "Wo weren't watched and
fhoumled by the police like the kills
(are today. The sheriff and his of
t fleers never dreamed of sticking
inch noses into our parties. They
somehow had the opinion Unit we
could lake care of ourselves," he
sab). .
"Jitit the young folks todny have
no freedom. They can't get out
into any kind of a crowd without
having 11 policeman trailing them.
(They i-nn'l even take their- best
:girls out for a little spooning wllli-!-out
being in danger of ati officer
: of the law poking his head into
-their car and making It his busi
j ness. '
t "I'm glad I lived my youth In
the good old days. No, the kid
I liiemseives aren l bad today but
I they're not given a chance to prove
-that they a re d ece n t . Fo I k s are
pi'etty much the same from one
ago to, anol her. It's the present
I methods of supervision that are
j till wrong."
