. EXIT AN ENGLISHMAN
fS tbe drive home from the Ironl-
cally futile vigil before Rita
Gllmore's apartment, Barbara defi
nitely decided to marry Henderson.
A sense of bitterly hurt pride
drove ber to tbls decision. She
decided on telephoning him tbe
first thing In the morning. For tbe
remainder of tbe night she would
try to sleep.
She did try. Sbe tried In a per
sistent, determined fashion. But,
in spite ot that, she lay awake un
til dawn.
Eventually, when Bhe did sleep,
a nlglitmare tormented her. Sud
denly she opened her eyes. Imme
diately conscious that her' tele
phone was ringing.
She picked up the, receiver. ,
"That you, Barbara? It's your
Uncle Henry. I'm coming right up
to the bouse. Must, see you Im
mediately." Sbe felt more than surprised.
Mr. Vandaveer London was an ex
ceptionally busy man. It was most
unusual tor blm to honor his niece'
by a visit during an hour usually
reserved strictly for business. So
Intent was sbe upon not keeping
him waiting that she completely
forgot to telephone her decision
to Henderson.
Mr. Landon was pacing the sit
ting room when' sbe finally came'
down.
"Morning Barbara. : Can't say
that you're looking well."
Barbara smiled wanly.
"Late night," she explained. -
"Been out with that fellow Hen
derson?" . "Yes. Why?" ; -
Her uncle cleared his throat.
Then, In ' characteristic manner,
came directly to the point,
"What's all this I'm bearing
about you and blra?" ..
, Barbara stiffened and turned
slowly to face him.
"Meaning that we'-ve been seen
about a good deal together?"
"No.- I've Just heard that yon
Intend dlvorclug Ray In order to
ninrry him.", ' -
Barbara's eyes widened, Mr,
La 11 ilon decided that, whatever she
Intended doing, she didn't look
too bnppy about It, V
"Who told you that?"- Barbara
nsked wonderlugly, "I only decided
It myself Inst night."
"That so?" Mr. Landon -paced
the , carpet once more. "Then
there's been some fishy business go
ing on, my dear, and 1 think you'd
better heari of It." . .
A's be spoke he throw himself
down Into tbe only rocklng-chalr.
"It's like this. Yesterday a fel
low, name ot Freeman, called Into
my ofllce he arranges loans for
those in need of financial assist
ance. After he'd henioicd . and
hawed for several minutes he inquired,-
as discreetly, as possible,
what truth there was In the ru
mor that my niece Intended to di
vorce her present husband to mar
ry Ralph Henderson. Then he told
me, after I bad bamhooiled him
Into It, that tho fellow had been ob
taining loans from blm on that un
derstanding.", i
"Yon menn that Hontly'a been
borrowing money on the strength
of marrying me?" Barbara's voice
was one gasp ot amazement.
Her uncle nodded,
i Barbara didn't feel the could be

Mr. Landon awkwardly patted
her shoulder. , -. 1
"There, there, my dear, U must
have been a nasty shock to you,"
his voice was purposoly gruff to
disguise the tenderness behind It.
"Damnably unpleasant business.''
. "But uncle,, surely they Would

Her anger had passed. Her chief
emotion was amazement at the ef
frontery of tbe man. Suddenly, no
ticing a vase ot mauve orchids, sbe
burst into a mirthless laugh.
"I suppose even those orchids
were eventually to be paid for out
of my money!" Then, a moment
later, "Why did he do It? Ray
would have died rather than have
done such a thing!"
Tbe last remark bad slipped out
ot her unconsciously. Immediately
she regretted It, hoping that her
uncle would let It pass without
comment. But he didn't.
"Your mention of your husband,
Barbara, brings me to a point about
which 1 bare been meaning to
speak to you. You've decided upon
getting a divorce?"
She nodded, staring straight
ahead of ber down at, the carpet,
as though there was some mystic
writing on It she was trying to de
cipher. "On what grounds?"
"Incompatibility, 1 think." .
Not even to ber uncle could she
bring herself to tell of Ray's seem
ing unfaithfulness.
"Well, that's up to you, Barbara.
Can't say that 1 thought much of
Ray myself. No bead at all tor
business and 1 can't see that he'll
ever make mucb money at that
composing of his. I hear he's play

As she didn't speak be brushed
the tobacco ash off his waistcoat
and rose to his feet.
"Sorry, my dear, but I must be
going. Business, you know. Cbeer

ber that line out of the Mikado,
'There are lots ot good flsb in the
sea.' But I'd give that man Hen
derson a wide berth In future. If 1
were you." - :. .
That precisely, was what Barbara
did. She was not at home when ha
telephoned:- neither was she,. it.
home when he called.
Finally, when he wrote begging
an explanation, she told him .caif
ilhlly what she had learned from
her uncle and, foe further Informa
tion, referred him to Mr, Landon
himself, . ..
The next she beard ot Henderson
was his name on a passenger list
as a-nong those returning to Eng
land. She - was surprised to find
that she was only mildly Interested i
In Ibis Item; Indeed what amazed
her most ot tha whole affair was
bow little the discovery of tbe
wortblessness of Henderson had
hurt ber. It only showed bow 'It
tie she had cared tor blm. '
She was beginning to recognize
that ber liking for him had been
little more than the gratification of
her own vanity. Slowly she was be

the colossal selfishness of ber out
