n JCEJEP AHO IMPROVE THB JACKSONVILLE MUSEUM
UNLESS the people of Jhckhoii 'County woke' up nnd fake
(iiiek action, they will lose one of their (frontest nssetH in
the way of attraelinK tourist trove!. A movement in already on
foot to transfer the old pioneer museum in .Jacksonville, to Port
land, where up-state interests claim it will he ffiven (he getting,
and receive the support, it deserves, . ,
Last year over 4IK) tourists visited' the Jacksonville museum
in spite of the fact that it was inadequately liiused, and no spe
cial effort was" made to attract the attention of out-of-state
visitors. Here is an exhibit which is uniipie in the state, mid
the value of which increases steadily as the years go by.
The place for the exhibit is where it is, in JaekKonvill
and there it should remain. The people of Jacksonville realize
this, and are doiiiR everything in their power to bring this about.
Hut they' can't do the job alone, and they should not be ex
pected to. i
IT is as important to Medford and Ashland, probably more
important to this community, as the center of tourist travel-
that the old pioneer museum should remain in the former
county seat,' as to the people of Jacksonville.
Bid to do this will require money,-as well as sotne well
directed and intelligent effort. And, in our opinion, Medford
should immediately assume the leadership in Ibis direction.
The Jacksonville museum is now of genuine interest, and
weTl repays a day's visit. Hut lack of funds has resulted in
inadequate housing arrangements and prevented a schedule of
exhibition hours sufficiently convenient for the traveling public.
With the expenditure of a few thousand dollars, such ob
stacles could be overcome, nnd the exhibit greatly improved,
both by better arrangement and the addition of many articles
o interest, now reposing in the attics of our pioneer homes.
AS Frank Jenkins of Eugene said last night, it sometimes
takes an outsider to appreciate' the resources and oppor
tunities of a community. Here at its very doors Jackson County
has an extremely valuable tourist resource, and an opport'inity
to make it a permanent one of steadily increasing value.
And yet not only has no concerted action been taken toward
this end, but the threat of losing the resource entirely lias failed
to arouse a sufficient public interest to bring forth the slightest
protest. -
Here is a situation which, it seems to its, is well worth (lie
serious attention of the Medford and Ashland Chambers of Com
merce, the County Court and all public spirited citizens of Jack
son County.
The Jacksonville museum should 'be retained in' Jacksonville,
it should be enlarged and improved, and the people of Jackson
County should, without further delay, see that this is done.
IS THE MEDFORD
."With the loss of Its first team and Its coach, Hertford can't
expect to have a championship football team this year. We don't
expect the present team to be a set-up. But It Is too much to ex
pect that a green team, with a new coach, can repeat the triumphs
of the past few years. Medford has shown It can be a good win
ner. Now let's show we can be good losers. Attend the football
games, and give Coach Hagen nnd the boys. the Btipport they de
serve. Not only Is this good sportsmanship, but it Is the only
way we can develop a team that can eventually regain that su
premacy which circumstances have forced us to relinquish."
THIS is an extract from an editorial published here, just be
fore the present footlmll season opened. We regret to
state thut tile advice then given
the season thus far has been a very discouraging one, lint 'no
more so than was to be expected. Ami while it has been disap
pointing to the fans, it lias been far more disappointing to the
team and it coach.
.
WIEAT a contemptible spirit, that would let down a team
under such circumstances! It would seem that merely a
sense of common decency would prevent any exhibition of the
anvil chorus at the present time. Whether with a team or an
individual it 's the man who is down who needs a helping band,
not the man who is sailing on the high wave to another triumph.
And while some people may think the sport of football
doesn't deserve such serious attention; as a matter of fact, the
issue in the present situation is really not winning or losing
football games; nor is it only a matter of good sportsmanship.
It is in the final analysis, a matter of civic loyalty and the Med
ford spirit. '
For the Medford High School football team is really Mod
ford's team. Our championship teams of the past have been so
regartled, and no one denies. they brought prestige and valuable
publicity to the city, y . .
IX other words, by their present attitude, Medford fans tell
the world that the Medford spirit is something that goes
great guns in victory, lint that promptly wilts and quits at the
first sign of defeat.
That ISN'T Medford 's real spirit, and we are glad a group
of Medford business men have formed an organization to give
the High School boys a banquet, and show that it isn't.
So let's all get behind them,
