Much Testimony Ruled Out
in Hearing of Ineligibility
charges Against High
School Players Lawyer
Is Barred.
I'OUTLAXD, Ore., Oct. 2C (Jp)
An avalancho of testimony tind
reams of evidence which metnberu
of tho Oregon High School Ath
letic association ruled out. as im
material left tho La Ornnde-Baker-CorvalMs
high school football tan
gle without decision today after as-
'jsnciatlon board members postponed
the heailng until late afternoon for
further testimony.'
The tangle appeared when the
LaGrumle high school officials
filed a protest with the association
against Baker and five members
of the Corvallls team of that city.
H. W. Adams, principal of the Cor
vallls high school, at which at least
two of the five protested players
once attended, entered another pro
test against Baker along the same
lines. t
La Grande protested that Clay
ton Crawford. Melvin KHers, Clar-
ence Weber, Carroi Smith and Har-
old Joslin attended other schools
(during the year of 1928 and 1H29
and were ineligible to play on the
Baker team because their parents
resided outside of the Baker school
district.
Residence Claimed
Led by Hugh Coleman, superin
tendent of schools at Baker, the
delegation from that city. Includ
ing George Scott, coach, attempted
to prove that the players were
rightful resltlonts at Baker because
of guardianship papers which hnd
been obtnlned through court pro
cedure for them. E. D. Towler.
principal of the I.n Grande high
school, who with E. P. Longfellow,
the l.a Grande superintendent of
school:, took exception to the
gunrdinnship procedure nnd en
deavored to prove that such papers
were issued just after La Grande
protested. v
A sharp debate ensued between
La Grande nnd Baker ofl'icjnls
when Baker introduced A. S. Grant,
on altornoy of that cily, to present
the legal end. The board ruled
that testimony nnd remarks be
kept within school officials and
lhat legal nrivlce was not permis
sible at a hearing between school
teachers.
Coleman, just prior to the start
of the hearing, which was called to
order by B. 11. Conklfi. principal of
the Medford. Ore., high school nnd
member of the hoard. Rprang a
surprise by clitninaiing the names
of Crawford and Smith from tho
protested lisi.
"We will rorfolt nil games Maker
has played with other schools in
which Crawford and Smith have
plajed," he said.
