Chapter 81
PAYING THE PIPER
I.V Hie days following Henderson's
arrival, Ray scarcely saw Bar'
bara. Rarely did she tumble Into
bed until long after Ray was asleep,
He had left tor the office before she
arose, and she had given up lunch'
lng with him in the city.
Even when he did see her alone-
a rare occasion hi Itself sho would
prattle continuously of parties, par
ties, parties, until he felt that he
could scream at the mention of the
word.
Seldom did be accompany tbem
on those occasions, pleading that
late hours interfered with his office
work. Soon, as was Inevitable,
since he invariably refused, Bar
bara's friends gave up Inviting hint.
"Do come, Barbara, and bring
that charming English friend of
yours, Mr. Henderson," some girl or
other would say over tlio , phono.
"We're all so crazy about. hlm!"(
No mention of Ray. . At . first
this elimination of Ruy, annoyed
Barbara, and once she had been
known to retort:
"Why, yes, I think we shall be
glad to come. All. three of ns.
You're inviting Ray, of course."
"Of course, dear; careless of me
not to have mentioned him. But I
guess I thought that, as usual, he'd
be too busy to accept!" ,
Then just the faint suspicion of a
laugh, implying that tho speaker
knew as well as Barbara that her
words had been mere bluff, for
wasn't it obvious that Barbara had
no use for her husband when sho
had that attractlvo Englishman Ja
tow?
She did wnnt Ray. It both hurt
and exasperated her that he would
never accept.' But her own prlda
refused to allow bor to plead with
him. So it invariably happened
that she and Henderson went alone.
Ray, on his part, found that
these evenings he spent by himself
were strangely precious. Not as
precious, of course, had he and Bar
bara been at home together just
the two of them but better, Int
nltely, than' being one of a crowd
of noisy, shrieking people.
Directly ahe and Henderson were
out of the horfso. he would go up to
his den, a room right at the top of
the house that contained little in
the way of furnishing except a
piano. Once there he would com
mence to play usually a tune that
h.tj been running through his head
ail day some elusive melody he
was determined to capture.
Presently, he would forget his
surroundings, imagining Instead
that be was on a platform leading
an orchestra in some composition
of his own. Then, at the conclu
sion, he would imagine the applause
in that moment supremely con
sclous of the thrill of recognized
achievement
No longur Roy Lowther the pen
niless saxophone player whom Bar
barn Laudon had married, he was,
instead, Ray Lowther the famous
composer- who had put jais on a
higher plane than that it had yet
achieved,
Ray 'iad not Intended to accom
pany Barbara nnd Her-" son to
Bertha Maltlan Vs party. But since
she had called him personally on
the phone and had insisted that
she bad plan tl it c a Saturday
nlglrt especially so that he might
be tlwre, he did not see bow he
could reasonably refuse.
It was nothing unusual in the
way of parties. A jaded crowd, mu
sic from on ctectrlo Vic oln! the
VhcJe houso permeated, by a forced
hilarity that had littlo real fun be
neath it. ,
Late In the evening, Ray found
himself momentarily Isolated, a
brunet he had been endeavoring
to auiU9e having drifted away in
the arms of some other man. Notic
ing 'hat men were in the majority,
ha felt no compunction la wander
ing oft Into .oue of the adjoining
rooms. . . ' - .
It was a small room, romantically
darkened, the only light filtering
through heavy purple lampshades.
He smiled sardonically, thinking
on the reason for (bis thusness and,
without more ado, flung himself tit
fuli length into an arm-chair, ' ,: '
Presently his Jlda. closed down
and he felt himself "otttlng away
Into space. For a. while he fought
against this feeling but. In the end.
It must have conquered, hln? for the
next thing of which he W"b.' actively
conscious was voices In a. far cor
ner of the room, '
Fully awake now,, be wondered
whether the newcomers were Ig
norant of bis presence; they might
well be since the back of bis chair
hid him completely. . About to
make some movement,' he suddenly
recognized from the Voices that the
man. was Henderson' and the girl,
Cora Munford, tbftt last ward In
flappers. ...
I And you girls over here most
awfully, attractive," Henderson was
saying, "You've got it all over our
English girls. How do you do It?
You seem to wake up so much
sooner and make so much more of
your youth. It you don't mind my
saying It, an English girl of your
age would have a self-conscious air,
two pigtails, an irritating giggle and
a shiny hose!,"; ; . .-
Cora Munford smiled. It was a
smile that began with her eyes and
worked slowly all over her face.
I noticed that when I was abroad
last year," she told him, "they did
seem awful timb to me. Why, at
one country house where I visited,
when they heard my age they ex
pected me to have dinner In the
nursery with the kids.!"..'
They both laughed.
"What do you think makes the
difference?"
Cora appeared to be thinking.
"It's because we've got the pep."
she announced finally. "That's
what counts In a girl. So long as
you've got pep, and plenty of It, you
can get any follow you want!
Henderson regarded her with a
tolerant smile. - This sophisticated
kid he found vastly entertaining.
And what sort, of a fellow do
you want? It pep'-i your criterion,
then, without a doubt you'll land
him!"
"Oh, I Intend to marry some
wealthy man, divorce him, and then
live oft the' alimony," she an
nounced laughingly.
Henderson straightened himself
with a jerk. Such a diabolical
statement to come from the lips
of this soft piece of femininity who
but yesterday must have been a
mere babel However, she might
not be serious.
That blasts my hopes complete
ly," he said. "We'd been getting
on so famously tonight that I'd be
gun to hope. ..."
"Cut out the sob stuff," she Inter
rupted. "Besides, every one knows
that you're hooked already."
Again he regarded her In amaze
ment. These American girls could
be frank; distressingly frank! Bin
be answered good humoredly.
"That's interestln'. On whose
hook am I supposed to be dangling?'
"Barbara Lowther'B, of course
You're always together."
With his innate reserve, Ilcndef
son's first impulse was to resem
her outspokenness. . But, on second
thoughts he reflected that to be sg
openly coupled with Barbara might
be to his decided advantage. '
"I'll admit that Barbara and I do
hit it off pretty well," he conceded.
"That's obvious! But what I
can't figure out is how her husband
stands for 1L He doesn't look while
livered to me!"
Henderson laughed shortly.
"The poor devil has to stand for
IL All the monoy belongs to her
and you know the old maxim: 'Who
pays the piper is at liberty to call
the tune!'" ,r
