MADISON,. Ind. Oct. S3. VP)
President Hoover paid Indiana n
brief visit ' today;' braving chill
winds and. rain to-ree.t the crowd
which, gathered at the Madison
dock, where his river boat tied
up for twenty minutes. .. , ' .
Tragedy threatened to mar the
Indiana BieetlnB. Four national
Kuardsmen were severely injured
and burned In a futile effort to
fire a presidential salute. 'The
dumpened powder . exploded pre
maturely. Effort was made to keep news
r.l the accident from President
Jloover and he left Indiana's
shores for Louisville. Ky., appar
ently without knowing anything
about It. ' ;
WITH PRESIDENT HOOVER'S
FLOTILLA. ON THE OHIO. Oct.
23. () Storms by water seem
to pursue President Hoover.
On this voyage to commemo
rnte the opening of the lock sys
tem on the Ohio, .he encountered
last night one of the worst Octo
ber storms experienced In this
section In many years.
Equipped with a patent bow,
which easily split the waves, his
steamer, the Greenbriar, bucked
head waves with ease, compared
to the snubnosed-craft that came
behind it, and rode the -blow well
while anchored for the night, as
did the other, craft. .
- Just as In the old days, ' the
Ohio was no respecter of persons
when it decided to go on a ram
page, .so today It kicked up for
President Hoover again, giving him
a rough ride In the face of a gale
and. cold,' driving' raln;..,vMe.n.,' on
ho of the craft described the
Morni which the president has en
, rnuntered as one of the worst In
DiaIi nvnorlpnop... .As Ahe ' snub-
nosed steamers ploughed Into the
waves, water broke over the for
ward decks with spray going com
pletely over the tops.of the high
deck houses.
Although not a particularly good
seamnn. President Hoover enjoyed
the trip, as did Mrs. Hoover, who
takes kindly to rough weather at
sea. She climbed Into the pilot
house on the Greenbriar to chat
with Captain Lester Hill, one of
Ihe old-time river pilots, who kept
right on chewing his tobacco in
splto of the presence of the first
lndy. He told Mrs. Hoover some
Interesting stories of his long ex
perience on the Ohio and Missis
sippi rivers.
Only n few hundred persons
gathered In the rnln at Madison,
Ind for the half hour's ceremony
there, held nn hour after the flo
tnin unt under wav after an nil
night anchorage 14 miles up the
river. With Governor Leslie were
M. Burt Thurman, Republican
slate chairman of. Indiana and
Mnvor Mnrcus H. Sulzer and
others.

: Organizing a Community Chest
campaign is a liberal education In
itself, according to Hamilton Pat
ton, chairman of Medford's . pio
neer community chest drive, which
will open here November 12 and
continue to November 16.
"Having spent several months
investigating other fields of activ
ity throughout the United States,
and studied .their problems, the lo
cal, committee started out hero
with more" or less definite Ideas for
Medford's community chest," ho
said. "But we've had to continu
ally rearrange our plans and reud
just our organization to new situ-,
atlons and discoveries until the
complexion if not the fundamentals,
of the original Idea has been con
siderably changed. . -
We have found out that we can.
accomplish so -much mare than we
thought at firsthand with the moral
support and contributions of nt(
least 2500 subscribers to the chest,
we believe that the local situation
will be well taken care of," he
said.
As It Is, there are-seven bene
ficiaries on the community chest
list. Mr. Pntton Is in favor of In
cluding the local churches, but that
problem, which would add other
complications, has not as yet been
worked out.
With a goal of $20,000. nearly
$13,000 of which has already been
given in cash and pledges, the or
ganizations which will benefit by
the drive, and eliminate the neces
sity of Individual campaigns
throughout the year are the fol
lowing: Red Cross, $5,480; Boy
Scouts, $4,970; Girl Scouts, which
have been organized only a year,
$1,000; Salvation Army, $2,000; Y.
W. C. A., $1,000; health unit, $1.
000. and the Humane society, $750.
The comparatively small amount
allotted the local health unit Is ex
plained by the fact hat this rte
partmenf receives aid from tho
county court.

"They work while you sleep"
When the towels Deed help
there is nothing like cascara;
nothing more efficient, nothing so
V);uod for the system. Any doctor
can confirm these facts.
Candy Cascarets give you pure
cascara in a most pleasant form.
Take one tonight. See how fine
you feci all next day. Without
discomfort and without harmful
effects this gentle laxative cleanses
the whole thirty ftet of bowels.
Cascarets never produce that
nauseous feeling usually asso
ciated with the use of laxatives.
And their action is so natural
that there is no danger of forming
the laxative habit. You can take
them as often as you please or
give them freely to children' or
old folks. ,
A coated tonfctie or a laden
breath is a signal for a candy Cas
carct. Or a sick headache, or any
sluggish feeling ; any time you be
lieve the liver and bowels are not
functioning fully, Cascarets will
sweep away accumulations in the
lower bowel. They are sweetened
with pure cane sugar and flavored
with real licorice, making them
the ideal laxative for children.
Full medical endorsement
proves their principle is right;
the use of 20 million packages a
year proves their effectiveness.

That excessive and unnatural
limness that ruined the health of
thousands of women and young
girls is no longer fashionable. Paris
couturiers are developing clothes
for the rounded figure. Musical
comedy producers are searching for
healthy, normal figures for the
stage. All the world is getting
health-wise where the human figure
is concerned.
This means that women and girls
will be encouraged to eat enough
varied foods at regular meals to
supply the requirements of health.
It means that tuberculosis, anemia
and other dangerous results of
undernourishment may be more
easily averted. And to the eyes of
discerning men and beauty experts,
it means that women will be more
natural and more beautiful.
Eat cereals, milk, fruits, vege
tables and meats daily. Do not
gorge or overeat, but eat variety.
Remember that flavor is the one
important factor in causing people
to eat varieties of foods, and that
sugar is nature's supreme condi
ment for developing the flavors of
nearly every healthful food.
The necessity of a dash of sugar
for making cereals, -fruit and milk
desserts delicious is well known.
Women cooking experts recently
discovered that a dash of sugar In
vegetables while they are cooking
revolutionizes their freshness and
natural vegetable flavors. Most
foods are more delicious and nour
ishing with sugar. Th Sugar
