on laying the city water mains to
the air port and it Is expected to

on Court street north across tho

musical hour presented by the Cali
fornia Oregon Power company over
stHtion KMK1) last night. The pro
gram, arranged by Jan. Stevens,
featured tho following artists: Mil
dred Plland. lyric soprano: George
Peckham. basso; Montana Mnhan,
violin, and Kvelyn Wold, piano.
Miss Malum made her initial how
to the radio public of southern Ore
gon last night und scored a de
cided hit with her splendid rendi
tion of sevonil difficult numbers
including. Kreisler's Paraphrase on
Paderewskf's Minuet. This young
lady, who recently came here from
tho east, gives proncde of a brill
iant future.
The solo numbers by Mrs. Pilund
nnd Mr. Peckham met with a
hearty rospon.se from listeners-lu.
and Miss Wold was responsible for
the excellent accompaniments for
each artist.
Simple funeral services, drab
in the absence of pallbearers and
mourning friends, were held this
forenoon for W. L. Thompson,
who died yesterday morning ai

burns sustained while cleaning
clothes with gasoline. Thompson,
a Texan who came to Medford
six months ago, lived on Mc An
drews street, with his two youny
sons, eight nnd 12 years of age,

commorco headquarters yesterday
reminiscing over tho days when
he had admittance to the homes
of nil the old timers in the his
toric: little town.'
Judge If. K. Hanua, whom
Stonewall describes as the "ver'
biggest man that was," shook
bands with him often and called
him by name. He was also well
acquainted with the Hanleys and
with Thomas O. Heamea, tho
Orths, the sheriff . and others
among the prominent pioneer fam
ilies. lie came to Jacksonville from
his California home with a rela
tive In ls.l!( and can vividly re
meiftber the entrance of the old
covered wagons into the surround
ing country, and the hunger for
gold that shone In the eyes of
many of tho new coiners. H

the trials of many of tho brave
pioneer women, and the parts that
tho individual settlers played In
the later growth and development

club. Following the meeting, the

after which refreshments were

The county court this afternoon
was engaged In poring ovvr thtf
budgets or the various county of
fices, submitted to show the esti
mated expenditures , and receipt
for H30.
Most uf the county officials sub
mitted their budgets yesterday in
accordance with the law. but a few
were delayed. According to, tho
county eJerk, those presented were
the same or slightly lower than
last year.
The county court will go over
the budgets and prune and econo
hlze before the formal presenta
tion of the budget to the budget
board, which will hold its first
meet lug next Monday, October 7.
The budget, under the law, must
be ready lor turning over to the
assessor early next January for
extension on the tax rolls and fix
ing of the lax levy.
Tho county court also expected
this afternoon to decide upon a
member of the budget committee
from the smith end of the county.
The name of Louis Dodge of Ash
laud, was mentioned for the post,
also C. H. Vaupel. who served on
the board two years ago. Mr.
Vaupel. friends said, would be In-capucittiti-d
for the post by Illness.
