The -Clates and Armstrong firms
rented the vacant lot at Sixth and
Hartlett streets for a used car sale
from Clarke und Dinge, who later
leased the lot'.' to a man by the
name Of Garfield from California,
vltir the understanding that he
was to take possession this morn
ing and Gates and Armstrong wero
to use the lot Saturday for their
sale. . ' 1 ' '
The sale proceeded na advertis
ed In the afternoon, hut when the
tlmfi' came for the evening the jot
wns padlocked. -
"Pop" Gates said that when he
discovered the padlock ha sought
a conference with Garfield, who
would not confer, and he then pro
ceeded to the city attorney, who
rendered a decision that the rent
ers could tear orf the padlock as
the lessee was not In possession
until Monday morning. Instead of
following the city attorney's advice
Messrs. Gates and Armstrong en
lilted the chief of police, who after
words with Mr. Garfield, secured
the unlocking of tho padlock. It
was then too late to go on with the
snlo and Messrs. Gates and Arm
strong postponed their said until
Wednesday on a lot op Riverside
near Twelfth street.
In the meantime the city attor
ney will be asked to probe the af
fair and find out If the city plan
ning commission's edict that no
more used car lots he allowed to
operate iu tlie business district aft
er the expiration of III" present
lease, holds water.

OF FOREST FIRES
Although there are no forest fires
in the Crntcf national forest or on
state' land adjoining, so- far as
coul( bo learned early tiiis after
noon, the forsi fire smoke nui
sance is just as hud in the valley
and throughout the forest section
as a short time ago, being so thick
that one could only see a short dis
tance. The outline of Itoxy Anne
could not be seen from the busi
ness section of 'Medford' most of
loday, and the hills to the south
were entirely hidden from Medford.
' The Crater national forest serv
ice was 'bndiy cHpnled.' iis , regards
detecting and fighting forest fires,
because ul the limited visibility of
the foreHt lookouts.
The forest fire smoke conies
from finest fires burning on the
Umpqua divide! in Dougles county
new fires starting there lately
and tho smoke of which was driven
to tho valley ond surrounding
mountain sections along Trail
creek from Its head by northeast
winds of yesterday and today.
Out Ih the Appiegate nectiou the
forest lookouts call only see two
miles distant, whereas their usual
visibility Ih from 20 tn SO miles
dlsti.ftt.Trom Wagner Bntlo to the
South, only 14 miles away from
Medford. the lookout can only see
two miles distant and Medford Is
hidden from him ehtiirly.
Up Crater I.nke way the lookouts
at Hustler peak can only sect 15
miles away, : and the lookout on
Old Rnldy now has about the same
range, whereas their usual vision
on a clear day Is from 50 to 60
inlles distnnt.
