WAS11INC.T( Wi The propos
ed visit to America of Ramsay
MacDonaid. Iiritish prime minister,
is causing a pleasant flurry over
the usually glassy surface ot Wash
ington's social sea.
K very one is very circu inspect
about predicting jut what will or
might happen in the way of form;!!
entertaining, an integral pari of
any official visit, and there is little
precedent of recent years l( serve
is a criterion.
The piojeMed visit, however, an
event of unparalleled importance
to ofi'ici.il. diplomatic and social
Washington, is a tea table tojlic of
unflagging inteiest in the sin mm
hones around Dupunt circle and
out .Massachusetts avenue and Six
teenth street.
Sir Ksine Howard. Pritish am
basvador to the I'nited States, who.
wi:h Lady Isabella Howard, prob
ably will be the MacDonald host,
lias leased for the summer a pre
tentious nnil beautiful country es
tate in Prince (leorges county.
Maryland, eijjlit miles from Wash
ington. Mr. MacDonald may slay there,
or he may make his home at the
Itritish embassy in Connecticut
avenue. If his daughter lshbel ac
companies him it is regarded as
, Mkely that the country estate
j Lang ley Park will be their resi
dence. The belief also has been
ex trussed t hat President Hoover
may hvo them as -AV'hito House,
guests. ... (
Langley Park, owned by MeCor
111 irk Cc'idlioart, is famous in Wash
ingion society and diplomatic cir
cles for iis spacious gardens. The
house, furnished on a grand scale,
contains ;( rooms, and there are
r,mt acres of grounds.
The only recent event of coni
pnrahlc ncnpe was the. visit two
years ago of 1 "re infer Mackenzie
King of Canada, but his trip lacked
the important official aspects of the
projected MaeDonald visit.
President Hoover, who undoubt
edly will be a luncheon host to 'he
prime minister, was a guest with
M Kino- at the White Mihm-
luncheon for the former. Other
guests were the secretaries of state
and W;.r: William It. Castle, the
assistant secretary of state; Col.
Plantou Winship. White House
military aide, and Cupt. "Wilson
Prown. White House naval ulde.

afternoon for Mr. King.
As u rule there is only one social
affair given by a private citizen for
a visitor of M r. Mat-Donald's im
portance. There is not even any
speculation as to the Washington
hostess who might get the honor
on this occasion. .Much, of course,
will depend on Mr. Mac Dona Id's
wishes.,
Wheri'Premler King was here he
had luncheon one day with Senator
Crry of Phode Island, who Is a
personal friend. - Included in the
guests at dinners given by the sec
retary of state1 and the Prltish am
bassador at that time were several
senators and their wives as well as
prominent, Washington people.
In this plan for the Southern
Oregon Natural Attraction league,
lull la led and pushed by the Med
ford chamber of commerce, can be
seen clearly the breadth of our
Medford 11 la n for road develop
ment .
1 wish 1 had a proof of those
ma p dates prepared in the state
engineer's office at Se.lem ; t hey
would show better than any print
ed word that the plan of the Med
ford good roads development ex
tended north of Diamond Lake,
smith and east of Klamath (''alls,
as liir soul h westei ly as Crescent
City, and included alt the main
highways in that entire territory.
No person conversant with the
l ft or i!0 year record of our Med
ford efforts toward the develop
ment of highways in southern
Oregon can successfully deny my
uiiin lifted statement that that
effort has, during all that time,
been consistently nnd Intelligently
directed toward the upbuilding of
all the highways leading Into .lack
son county from every direction
and that they had as its fundamen
tal the entirely selfish thought that
only by developing the highways
leading to Jackson county through
all our surrounding counties could
we expect, or would we receive our
share of the rapidly growing tour
ist travel, the value of which is
just beginning to bo thoroly felt
and appreciated.
