CRUCIAL SERIES

Reds in Third Place
Hollywood Has Chance

( Ity tin Associated)
Pacific Coast league dubs today
were prepared to take up the cud
gel in the crucial offensive for the
second half banner of the 11'-V
season.
That this week's series would in
augurate t he most intensive cam
paign among five closely grouped
clubs w:ih an admitted fact, partly
because the end of the season is
not far off, but more because of
the almost phenomena i progress
made by clubs which in ten da vs
were able to forge to the top after
a long sojourn in the cellar of the
ague.
A shining example of what can
lie done In basebiili with a dash ' f
pep ami plenty of de terminal ion
might be derived from the experi
ence of the Portland Ducks last
week. Portland, almost since the
beginning of the season, has re
1 ma i ned in the second division.
I trading places with the Seattle lti
Idians in the cellar. Last week th'v
I defeated the San Francisco Sea is
seven In a row. and took the CoaM
I league by norm.
The standings today gave the
Portland Mucks 31 won out of ali
Jand the Los Angeles Angels sec
; olid place with 311 won and 23 lost.
! A full gi.me behind them were
the Mission Ueils. .Vex: stood llol
; lywood one more down, and San
i Krancico was in fifth place half
j a game behind the lleds.
Today the Portland Ducks wo
scheduled to face the Los Angeles
Angels In the Pose city. With the
first end second place teams iS
rivals for the lead, one of the
wannest series of the second half
was in sight. The Angels were
rafed a strong team and were ex
ported to give the Webfoot club a
lollgh week. The southerners have
clung near the top of t he league
for weeks, playing consistent base
ball and boasting a well -ha la need
team.
Oakland ami the Mission (teds
were slated to fight it out this Week
at recreation park here, while the
San Francisco Seals were pitted
against the p il-end Seattle Indians. I
the black sheen of the league. The
Seals were expected to have a higil- '
ly suce'sful Week against the In
dians. ; rid si a ud an excellent
chance to regain their prestige.
Sacramento and Hollywood were
matched lor a series at Los Am- I
gehs. With a good week in Hi-
sooth, ih- Hollyw- 1 club has a .
fair chance of sliding back Into ,
first d; ee at the lop of the leami".
The Sacramento S e n a tors, who
have been playing mediocre ba l
the last few weeks, were next t- ,
