1929 BECOMES
' I "1 0' H K was no rest for the i-i- r I i n 1 1 1 1 1 1 of air history on
the Pacific Coast last night. From sunset to sunrise this
morning the progress of tlie (Iraf Zeppelin was being recorded,
as it sped through the air, on its round-the-world trip, and at
live, this morning, was safely moored at its mast in l,os Angeles.
What an astounding achievement, what an epoch making
I triumph ! For so many years
JJ ' lishcil air travel over this terrestial globe, and across the. .Seven
5? .Seas, as u vision of the future thai it is difficult to realize that
; overnight it is an accomplished
lIF.HK is no aerial stunt, no sporting "lour tie force," such
as a frenzied hop of one or two aviators across the Atlantic
or around the world. Here is a real trip, in a ship of the air,
willi a passenger list and cargo sixty people in all, and a car
load of mail and express
And during this trip there was no snatching of sandwiches,
or of sleep; no furtive "pulls" al u coffee thermos, and as far
as recorded, no close calls. AVith a favorable wind the big
bhip of the air plowed through daylight and darkness, sunshine
and ftig, equally well, covering the 5000 miles from Tokio to
the Golden (iate in less time than it takes the fastest train to
go from Sail Francisco to Chicago.
J TOW different from the typical sea flight by plane! The
(iraf Zeppelin was in fact an aerial hotel. liegular meals
were served lour times a day, after dinner dancing was en
joyed; probably few slept, but sleeping was possible any time,
and in a comfortable bed. The only hardship was contained in
the smoking "verbolen" sign, but who wouldn't give up the
weed for a few days for the privilege of being ranked in
history with the Christopher Columbus of the air!
Yes, it was a great trip, a truly sensational accomplishment.
The debate between the lighter and heavier-tlian-air advocates
will no doubt continue, and at the present rate of progress, it
takes a very foolish person to be dogmatic about it. The air
plane may prove the more practical. Hut at the present moment,
the dirigible certainly wins.
DON'T WORRY ABOUT BEING SELFISH
TT'KW things could be more
oil eoterorisiii.r coiimiiiiiit
about charges of selfishness from
things are all in the day's work,
meet them is to good hunioredly ignore them.
For the more any community tries to convince others that
an unselfish benevolence is its guiding star, the less chance
there is of reaching that inter-community amity and under
standing which is so essential to consistent development and
progress.
.As n matter of fact no community worth its salt is more
interested in others than in itself. A foundation of self interest
is as essential to community, as to individual, success for cer
tainly if we don't look out for our own welfare no one is going
to do it for us.
Drr there is a limit to this sort of thing. And it is this limit
to which we believe .Medford should devote its attention,
I'.ither than trying to refute various charges, which have been
made from time to time in the past, and unless human nature
changes, will be made from time to time in the future.
And this limit is reached when any community like Med
ford fails to realize that any movement that tends to diseourago
the legitimate development of its neighbors, near or distant,
is not only poor manners but POUR HI'.SINFSS.
in other words a certain amount of self interest or selfish
ness, if you like is not only unavoidable in liny community,
tint altogether desirable. Trying to maintain that Medford is
not more interested in itself than
i childish and futile.
Dt T Medford is also sincerely interested in other communities
throughout Southern Oregon, not because we are so big
hearted and benevolent, but simply because most of us (not all,
unfortunately,) have come lo realize that whatever benefits one
part of this state benefits every part, and that certain amount
of time and energy spent in developing Southern Oregon as a
whole, is not merely a lot of appleeauee at ali, out is actually,
from .Medford 's standpoint, an enlightened self interest.
Finally the way to convince our neighbor of this fact is
not by talk, but action; not by words, but deeds. Such a pro
cess may take time, but eventually the truth always prevails.
So if we ignore the yaps here and there and Just tend to our
knitting along these lines, the real interest of Medford in both
its own development and the development of Its neighbors will
be apparent soon enough.
