The granite for the new stato
ofice building in Salem, otv which
construction work has alreadv

Blair Granite Quarries, inc., lo
cated on Xel! creek, south of Ash
land. Contract for the granite in
volves $15,000, according to C. A.
Hicks, vice-president and general
manager of the company, who is
located in Medford. The first four
feet above tile grade will be of
granite and the rest of the build
ing will be constructed of terra
cotta. It Is estimated that seven
carloads of granite, with a mini
mum of Uti.uuo pound: to the car,
will Ue shipped to Kalem.
A new air compressor and hoist
has Just been installed at the
quarries tnd a new road is being
built to them. The Mtone from
these quarries Is in biff demand
and 1 shipped all over tho north
west as well aa Into California.
Though Mr. Blair has operated the
quarries for a number of years,
a corporation has been form mi re
cently and many improvements arc
being made, tu afford- greater de
velopment and capacity to fill all
orders received.

hibit of work done by the students.
The display will be held at the
Civic clubhouse from 2 to 5 o'clock

Miss Marguerite Hansen has con
ducted n elass in art' appreciation
which follows the course that was
given last 'year. The last year's
course presented the subject In its
historical aspects and in chrono
logical order, a general survey of
the- graphic arts, soulpture. archi
tecture nnd painting, 'with particu
lar attention to line, value and
color.
; This year the art appreciation
has followed intensive study of
color., Tho first week's outline iif:
clmled the thory of the student t.i
eluded the theory and psychology
of colon. Tills instruction was
supplemented by illustrations done
ly the student to show the dec
orative, plastic and scientific val
ues of art. and there were attempts
at the Illustration of the dramatic
and emotional qualities of color.
One other line of work that was
offered this year for the first time
was costume designing for illus
tration and design, under the in
struction of Miss Marguerite Han
sen. This work was undertaken
io give th artist the ability to
reproduce ideas in Illustration
work such, for instance, as the Il
lustration of magazines, and also
to teach the artistic garment for
the tdvldiual figure.
The work of tno art "school closes
on Friday with the morning classes,
: ml after the exhibit of work the,
instructors and the students from a
distance will be leaving fdr their
homes.
