Chapter 34
A PLOT FRUSTRATED
IJPO.S' a slep ileepset In leafy
hedge sat two men, . black
vised' fellows, whose rough gar
incuts smacked of ships and Ills
aea. " . ' '.
"Sunset, Jonas!" said one,,
leaning to peer down the lane.
"Sunset, Jonas, and she be nlRh
doo, I rackon! Get 'ee down anil
stand by wl' the cloak; 'twiint do
lo let 'er squeak."
"She ain't agoln' to do no
squeakin' once I gets my 'auds on
er. Will, not she!"
Then, the better lo listen, they
stood mute In that place of deep
enlug shadows, viciously alert,
while from dry ditch at no great
stauce a pair of keen eyes
Helen swooned It the arms of her
watched them through tangled
wisps of gypsy-black hair.,
"Futsteps!" whispered Jonas,
suddenly snatching up a coll ot
small-cord.
A quick, light tread of feet com
ing rapidly nearer . . . nearer
yet . . . the two human animals
crouched lo leap. . . . Thus, my
lady Helen found herself suddenly
confronted by two vague yet men
acing shapes. Fierce arms iru
prisoned her; she strove lo scream
but a brutal hand choked her
then a heavy cloak smothered,
blinded, stifled her, a deftly knotted
cord pinioned her struggling
limbs. ...
A gasping oath and she was
down, rolling helpless In the dust,
yet with a consciousness of ded
perale strife above and all about
her a sound of blows, trampling
feel, a wild hurly-burly suddenly
ended. Then my lady, actually and
truly, swooned away like the mer
est female.
When her eyes opened again
she saw a face framed lu curly
black hair.
"Who . . . Who Is It?" she
gasped.
"Only me . . . Fullalove, ma'tn
. . . Dick!"
"Oh, thank God . . . oh, what
did It mean?"
"I'lck-pocketln"!"
"No here was more . . . more
than robbery! Are they, quite
quite gone?"
Hoofs upon the road approaching
at brisk canter, a horseman who
sang happily. ... An exclamation
of slarlled surprise and down leapt
the Marquis,
"Two men, Ned," cried my lady.
"They attacked me! This brave,
good fellow drove them off . . .
he Saved me . . . saved me from
oh, Ned!" And Helen shuddered
violently and covered her face.
"Split me!" exclaimed the Mar
quis, clasping a protecting arm
about her. "Now tell me all did
the vlllalne rob you?"
"No, Ihey meant not robbery,
Ned. But let us talk of sweeter
subject . . . tell me ot I hy An
gela."
"Angela?" he sighed. "Hy
heaven, she's a saint, Helen."
My lady stopped to turn and look
back.
"Fullalove! He fought for me
( saw blood on his face! lie saved
me from 1 never spoke him one
word of thanks!"
"Kh Ihe gardener fellow? I'll
ee he's sufli.-ienlly rewarded uy.
1 will!"
So Helen came safely home with
Angela's name sounding In her c;ir
repeatedly, hut before her menial
vision a face marked with hlooil.
