NO FAKE ABOUT AL SMITH

IIKKKKNllINli thitii: about Al Smith is his complete lack
of pose. Iu his "fp to Now' running in the, Saturday

ness -a disposition to write with an eye on the ultimate politi
cal effect. , ;
Hut one searches in vain for such evidence iu the i'irst t.wc
installments. In the recent, presidential campaign, it- is now
generally agreed, that his religion, jnut his close connection
with Tammany, defeated Al Smith, rather than any stand he
teolc on nat ional issues.
Il- is true, of course, thai no useful purpose could he served
by New York's former governor trying to deny his relip;iMis and
political affiliations; but iu a Jess candid character there would
certainly he a tendency to minimize the importaneu of sueh in
fluences in his life.
Hut iu "I'p to Now'' Al Smith e-ives a picture of his earls
life iu New York I'ity, uhieh is absolutely convincing in ils
frankness and sincerity, lie neither apologizes for, nor over
emphasizes, his politicul obligations to Tammany, tip his loyalty
lo the church to which he has always belonged, and to the re
ligion, iu wlflch he believes.
Ilis articles thus far not only jjivc a vivid and interesting
picture of New York life in the early '!0s, but' throw a most
iliiiiiiinit in:,' and lavonihle liht upon the uupretcnt iotisuess and
e:,sentiiil integrity of his character.

A Deliberate Falseliood
Attorney John Long, who'
returned from Medford Thurs-'
day after a brief sojourn, re
ports considerable drunK.en,
ness and carousing noticeable, ,
He says that tho saloons are-, m
conducted in a manner dis
graceful to any city, being
fairly alive with creatures .of -the
lower world. Mr. Iong
was somewhat disgusted with
the conditions existing and,
was more than pleased to get
home.
The above Is a news item from
the L'mpqua Valley News of Rose,
burg.
The Tribune does not know who
Mr. Long is, but It does know
that the above statement Is a lie.
Without attempting to defend
the saloon as an institution, it
can be truly stated that Medford's
saloons are as orderly, as any, In
the country and are as stringently
regulated. Saloon men who sur
reptitiously break the law are re
fused licenses.
Medford saloons are open front
and without boxes. Publicity, has
been found a great regulator. . No

litis Terminal.
The new. set-up of the Paolfic
Coast bus systems leaves no place
for a terminal at Grants Husa. '
Coder the bus c o m b i n a t i o n
agreement, the Pickwdck system
retains the Pacific Coast lines south' '
of Medford. The Yclloway will op
erate the lines north of Medford.
The Southern Pacific, while It has
an interest in both systems, will
not operate its own busses.
This gives .Medford the terminal,
because the lines divide at that
city. . ' ,
On the Redwood highway busses
will ha.se at Kureka, operating
north to Grants Pass and, south
toward San Francisco.
Operating conditions, no, doubt,
dictate that Medford should, ba-the

The division point Is not a mat
