All the beat generated r.c a home
Is lost eventually. AU that any iua- j

do u to retard it eacape so that ;
the cost of suppEyme mo it hat to

ing. Intfulatton is one of Uie mipor- j
tant ways of doing this, but tuere
ar other equaity neceasjary ways
of saving heating costa by ton
al ruction.
C. G. Septer of the American
Gas Association presents figures
which make this fact clear. He has
ar.&ly-zed some AO homes to find
out just wh: the heat losses oc
cur. His analysis shows the per
centages of the total for which the
various parts of the house are re
sponsible, as follow;
per cent

responsible for 4S per cent of the
total heat loss la a borne, the In
filtration of coid air arouiid doors
and windows is a much larger fac
tor than usually thought. The com
paratively small expense of weath
erstripping all windows and doors
U therefore justified.
Economy of Weu titers! ripping
Just what the economy of weath
erstripping Is likely to amount to
can be learned with a few figures.
Cracks between the frames and
sashes of double hung wood win
dows vary in width from 1-64 to
H of an inch or more; 1-16 of an
inch may be taken as, an average.
Cracks aronnd metal casements of
good make are somewhat thinner.
Multiplying 1-16 of an inch by 216
inches the distance around a win
dow of average size gives you 13 S
square Inches, That is the size of
the total opening around one win
dow if the crack Is of average
width. Tn other words, tho cracks
around eacb window of an ordinary
home are equivalent to a hole in the
wall 134 Inches square.
The amount of lnleakace throueh
such an opening varies according to
difference between the barometric
pressure indoors and outdoors, and
according to the velocity of the
wind. ,A moderate statement, baxed
on tests, is that the inleakage from
the crack around a single window
of average dimensions is 35 cubi;
feet a minute, with wind blowing
at the rate of 15 miles an hour.
Prevent Infiltration Around
Windows
Engineers have estimated that it
takes 6.74 pounds of coal a day to
heat the cold air leaking in through
the cracks around one window to
TO degrees when It is zero outdoors.
On the other hand, it has been esti
mated that only .79 pounds of coal
, a day are required to hest the in
leaking air around the lame win
dow in the same condition if the
window ir finely weatlierstrtpoed. .
It Is commonly asserted that good
modem weatherstrips will prevent
from 85 to 95 per cent of tho Infil
tration around a window; while tn
tT. S. Department of Agriculture
joins other authorities in stating
that from 15 to 25 nor cent cf the
total heat loss fiom a dwelling can
be prevented bv thenv- Copvright

AN English cotUge!
What a picture the
words call to mind. A lit
tle house nestling down be
hind well kept hedges and
a f-urden at the rear. The
desfgners of this house, No.
5-G-3. have succeeded ad
mirably In achieving a
gracious formality both
within and without, a
combination difficult
enough even in a large
house. The lower hslf of
the' house is of stucco
which, combined with the rough sid
ing of random widths in the gables
of the second story, makes an io
tcreeting contrast in materials. ,
The first floor plan shows a Ion?
livfhe room, one end of which is in-.
terded to be used as a dining room.
French doors open to the terrace
which overlooks the garden. The
terrace mar nave a nv awning to
cover it in the summer time end be
left op n in the winter; so that, at
that season, the living room will
not be darkened by a rcof. Or, the
terrace may be roofed. The draw
ings show rough hewn posts and
brackets in keeping with tho style
of architecture.
The kitchen has been planned,
with Ihc co-oneiaiion of American
Home Makerr. Inc., for the saving
of steps and convenience of ar-rar.-Kmont.
The lavatory might be
cnhuRed and a tub added if a down

or bedroom may bo ujed for a din

Vpstairs we find cne large bed

About Building
Questions addressed to this pa
per will be ansvertd by the Archi
tect' Small House Service Bureau
of the United States, Inc. Enclose
stamped addressed enKiop.
Q I have a flreplate that
smoke. Will it be of any bene
fit to arrange for a hood or
coml over the front? If so how
large should it be and what
flare J ,
A The usual way to cure a
smoking fireplace, where the arch
is too high, is to buUd up the back
hearth with one or two courses of
brick. This is easier than construct
inc eowl at the front. If a cowl
is used, its site and design depend
to a large extent upon the design
of the fireplace Itself. W suggest
you try raising the back hearth tee
fore doing anything more. Set the
bricks in temporarily before you
cement them. .
Q Is there anything that will
remove whitewash and calci
mine from hard plaster walls?
It is loose in spots and falls off.
We wish to repaint it.
A These paints can be washed
off. Afterward the wall should be
sued b&rore refinishimr.
. Q We have trouble with rain
coming around window casings.
It runs down and wets the plas
tering under ' the window.
Please advise a remedy.
A The chief cause of leakage
around windows is from inadequate
flashings over the cap mouldings
and under th side casings. Some
times this flashing is omitted alto
gether. It is easily installed. We rec
ommend you have first class
Duliaer look over the joh and make
necessary repairs.
' Q How should hardwood
floors that have been varnish
ed, then waxed, be cleaned be-
- fore re-waxing?
ABenzine is eomtnonlv pm.
ployed.
Q The paint on our house Is -In
bad shape some crocked,
some peeled off. We wish now
to repair.t. What is the best
method of removing the old
Faint? What caused It to fail?
A The old naint should be burn
ed off. Get an expert to do' This so
that your house will not catch fire.
Cracked paint is caused by the use
of inferior materials. Peelmc is
caused principally by the lack of
bond with the underlying wood.
Wet woodwork- is the" worst offender.
Q Our new roof leaks. The
roofer seems unable to find
where it comes through. How
would you go about patching
the leaks? There are also leaks
under the windows. How about
these?
A It is customarv in house con
struction for the roofer to survlv a
guarantee that tne roof will' be
storm tight for a number cf years.
If you have such a contract, you
ran hold your roofer. If he will not
irake repairs, advice the manufac-
ut.er. Leaks around wir.dov-.-s are
mcal aiwa3 caused bv lack of
.'lashing over the cap moulds ar.d
u:-.der the casings. Have these ia
rpeeted by a competent builder..
Q Is it a mistake to use H
inch hard wood flooring in re
surfacing an old floor?
A This thickness1 ;c tridely used
for re-flooring. 1 e!l laid ajid the
under flooring ir in fair condition
so that the r.ew flooring can go
