necessary business losses," and this net ion lias "probably been
responsible for much of the iiibrtulity in olicstelrie eases."
lit! maintains the press of this country said nothing liecause.
of the fear of iidvertisin" losses. '
THIS is a serious charge, and if -Mr. Ambrlisler lias any cvi
ilenee to support it, he sliould jiroinptly )roduee the same.
Frankly, we don't believe this charge. p AVe know it isn't
true of oiie newspaper, and we don't believe it is true of others.
That the policies of some newspapers arc dictate! by (heir
advertisers is Inie, but that the press of America lin 'u whole is
so controlled is simply buncombe. '
Jn a case like this wo know that no. advertiser and no eom
bimition of advertisers could silence the press. If- Mr. Am
bruster's charges are true, if the dnifi trust IS lusiili; its ad
vcrtisiiij' appropriation as a screen to itloak the iinlawt'ul manu
fueture of premrations which uj?l-'i'avute rather than ease the
pains of illness 'mid childbirth,' ' there isn't a tielf-respcetine;
newspaper in the country that would not jump into the fijiht
and assail such a barbarous iniquity until u complete victory
hud been won. .
WK hope this matter will be brought before the I'orllanJ
convention and all available facts determined. Certainly
if any siich remedies are now on 1h market, the American
Medical Association should remove tlu-iu from their approved
list inslanter. And in such action tlu' association can be as
sured it will have the support "of every newspaper iu the coun
try worthy of the mime.
ETHICS MAY
THK above situation brings into sharp relief one of America's
besetting wins, loose thinking and easy generalization.
Because everyone knows newspapers are dependent upon
advertisers for their existence, and bee a use there have been'
eases of t lie former adjusting iheir editorial policies to please
lie latter, a prevailing impression has grown up that all news
papers are 'owned body and soul 'by 'the advertisers, articu
hlrly by the large (Jues.
As a result, when "Mv. Anibrilsfer'di:ieovered this "argot of
rye scandal" Assuming he did discover one and he also dis
covered the newspapers hail not men'thmcd it, lie was merely
following the popular "psychology when be immediately ijs
siimed that he'press had been bought iip by the drug trttst.
It never oceunrcd to him, apparently, that this silence might
have 'been 'due to' ignorance of! the facts, that the matter had
never been brouulit to the attention bf'lhe newspapers 'of 'this
country as'a whole.
Y KT such iindouidedly vs the ease. And a contributing
factor was umptestiohiibly the Mipcr-conservat ism of the
medical profession iis a 'whole, the survival of that straiige
fcjudice against ublieity "getting iu Hie newspapers."
As a niatter of fact in u ease like this, tho medical profes
sion should lit once have taken the newspapers into their con
fidence, for in widespread and pitiless publicity lies their most
probtthly their only effective remedy.
Iliit there is that fatal Inertia and spirit of reaction, too
often disguised in the pure garments of "the ethical members
of the profession." (
Kthics are. fine and necessary. lut when the lives of the
mothers of a country are threatened, it is no time to think about
the formalities of the action, hut to act iu the most effective
way and at once.

Thin Is all just for fun, you under

examinations and college examina

ed are a poor sort of diversion, a
diversion of attention from the in
competent teaching, and the neg

where the demonstration is staged.
Of course I cannot object to ex

a mid-term or final test Is the only
check the educational authorities
have of the candidate's class work.
"Where this examination business
attains the height of absurdity is
In the elementary and high 'schools;
there, often enough, a pupir w hose I

it; on the other hand, many a pu

thing that teachers or educators

Answer. As the mode of trans

there Is no effective means of pre

is Isolated as completely as pos
