never luive Kiipportetl it. g
So sensible person would favor desU'oyiiiK tbe only city purk
we luive for the sake of seeurino; a eeittnil location for u county
building.
Hut the truth is the construction of such a building aIons
tlie Kihtli street side of the park would leave intact practically
the entire portion of the park now used by the publie. 'If pres
ent plans arc carried out such a structure, instead of dest rnyiiip
or mutilating the park, would, in our opinion, enhimce its value,
and render that portion of the city even more attractive than it
is at present. '
Let those who doubt this, walk over the park, and visualize
a handsome structure built flush with the Kililli street- boun
dary, and we believe they will aree this statement is correct.
Bl'T there is another important point. Med ford is f;rowin
rapidly. Real estate values are inereasinir. Jf Meflford
is to ever have what would be called a civic center, and if Med
lord is to ever have any park system worthy of the name, now
is the time to slart.
My placing the court house in the rear of the present citv
park, Medford will have the foundation nf a civic center, with
the publie library, post office and court house all within a
stone's throw of each other.
In a few years the present Washington school property just
on the west of the city park will be on the market. We be
lieve the cily, if it takes prompt, action, can secure this property
at a very reasonable prjee certainly no more than would be
rea-juired if tlie city ai'k'site should be abandoned, and the cily
required 1o pnreliaiic property in a less central location.
.
Til TS Washington school property would be admirably suited
for the proposed Community Club bouse, with ample room
for attractive gardens and recreation grounds for both yoiuiur
and old.
' And with such n community center established, then the
.Mail-Tribmie would favor taking action on a project which we
believe was first siiirtfcsled in this column over ten years ajro,
with Hear Creek as a nucleus, construct a real park system
north and south, of the present Mear Creek bridge.
In our opinion this district is admirably suited to a park
system centraliy located. wll!i flowinjr water, and much of the
district even now in what mibt be termed a "natural state,'
comparatively inexpensive to aequire.
W W
HKliK then, briefly, is our view of what Medford should do.
U .will take years to accomplish the complete program, but
has not the time arrived when in cimsiderino; new construction,
we should build with an eye to the future?
i .We realized at the outset the first public reaction to the
cit park site would be unfavorable, for we knew those tip
posed would immediately declare our due city park was to br
destroyed, and iio one would wish to have that done. Mut we
also said at that time that we believed, the more the people
studied tlie oily park location, not only in itself, but as a start
ing point of a new municipal system, the more heartily they
would be in favor of it. And (hat we believe is true. For this
selection is the logical startitt; point of a program Medford has
lnn; .needed, a far-seeino; city-betterment plan.
SINVFi endorsing tbe city park site we have been informed
from several siden that, the editor of the Mail-Tribune is the
member of some myslerious syndicate that has secured options
on land bordering the city park.

eategol ieallv ;
The present writer does mil now, and never has in the past,
purchased, oplioned or bargained for any real estate nearer the
city park than that upon which this office has rested for these
niany years.
We may be mistaken in this court bouse site matter (yes,
brethren, that is sometimes possible even for a newspaper edi
tor), but at least we have no selfish interest in it, one way or
the other. All we are trying to do is secure what wo regard as
the best county court house silo, and the best city improvement
plan for the city of Medford, regardless of every other consid
eration, factional, financial or political.

eood to Medford, we recall that
some time ago a half dozen sites !
were mentioned nnd the locations
varied from the heart of the city to
the oulskltts. As we have said
previously, convenience of the resi
dents of the COUNTY should be
considered in the location of a site
and naturally amide parking space
should be a thing to be cotiseder-
ed. In locating a public building
in tbe horsp-and-buggy days, one
of the big factors was the provid
ing of ample "hitchlng rack" space.
Just so is parking space necessary
today. Why not a location, out of
the heart of the city where a build
ing of beauty, might stand atone,
as a COUNTY CAPITOL. Let's
make It n COUNTY pnnroHitlon.
