Director of Jewish Charities
Sees 'Monkey Business':
in Arts,. Business and
Economics Tolerance Is
Needed, View. .
M 7
SAN ' FRANCIRt'O, June 26.
The world Ih inniiiK through
the "meddling use" an era dur
ing whir-h vry thing from the
radio to the fundutnental.s of life
are continually and - consiKtently
"inunkeypd with" so lr. S.uiiuel
C. Kohns, executive director of the
Federation 04' Jewish Charities of
Brooklyn, X. V., declared today in
his address ut the annual luncaeun
of the National Association of
Social Work at the l'alaee hotel.
"A curious manipulative hu
manity now populates this earth,"
Dr. Kohns said. "We "monkey
with everything. In music, in
plastic and graphic arts in liter-4.iure.r-in
business and economic
( pheres we take all sorts of lib
erties with standards. Finally in
the realm of life itself, tne present
age Is monkeying with every ac
cepted fundamental. This spirit
has definitely reflected itself in
the fields of social work and child
guidance. Two dangers may be
necif ically designated t hat of
standardization of human being;
and that of forcing the acceptance
of the doctrine that to control,
curb or repress tendencies to be
havior is likely to result in dam
age to oneself and to society."
It is unfortunate for the world.
Dr. Kohns declared, that psychol
ogists and psychiatrists cannot all
agree on life's f umltmentals. He
urged dewlopment of a broader
view of the practical understand
ing, or human living and an un
derstanding philosophy of life and
"u tolerance of certain kinds of
deviation which should be encour
aged rather than thwarted."
"But after all is said and done."
Dr. Kohns concluded 'only as we
break down artificial social condi
1 ions which destroy 1111 man per
sonality and distort the best that
is in us, only as we bring 'the
kingdom of God on earth -will we
ever be able to bring Godlike man
to a practical realisation.'

hers of the Dairy Exchange have 1
decided to change the grading i
classification of two of the ogg di
visions, fresh extras tr mixed

standards, which may or may not
be fresh, and fresh medium extras
of mixed colors will replace medi

Members say the substitutions
were made in order to Improve
the standard type of eggs traded
in on the board by prohibiting the
delivery of washed or sanded eggs
or eggs other than fresh. It Is
contended that this will raise egg
grades to a higher standard than
that required by the state law.
Quotations on the new grades
