in Cull vii-w of a hardy band of
rauitul fans thirteen vit-imit-K for
lilt' .Mack men in fourteen starts
aKaliVHi Walter Johnson's men. If
this is i-urrie.1 far enough, it may
easily mean the margin by which
the Athletics defeat I he Yankees,
hiTsuiuliiK always that they do
defeat tle Yankees.
Tho score of this latest outrage
against t'lurk f iriffith'v pr-m-i- of
m nd was 7 to ii. and the Senators
threatened to the very last: to pull
it out. Tho home forces did have
the satisfaction of seeing Robert
.M. (Jrove. star left h under of the
American k-uKue. making an nn
dijniified exit after the second In
ning, but Itulie WalberK was in
there when the pay-off took place.
Tho customary parade of Wash
ington pitchers marchc-'d thnnth
the box, headed by Hadley.
The victory netted the .-thletics
n aln of half a game over the
Yankees, who now trail by vIrUi
full tames anain. The champions
dii w better than an even break
against the Ited Sox. despite the
presence of iWibe Kuth in the
lh-sh on the bench. Freddy llei
mach exercised his customary
spell over the Hostunese in the
opener to win by to 0. hut Pip
fras. . Xachary , and Sherid shot
the chutes in the 'nightcap, which
Boston won by 7 to 4. l,ou Ceti
riir got his lSth home run in the
opener, holding his lie with Haley
of the Cardinals, who broke out
with a round trip blow at Chi
cago. Other teams in the Ameri
can league were idle.
Inspired no doubt by the loose
conduct of tho n raves who bra
zenly took two one-run decisions
from the Cardinals at St. Louis on
Sunday, the roaring Robins hit
the warpath at a most inoppor
tune moment for tho fJiants. Not
ciiltsfied with winning the first
"game' by H to 7, the Klatbush
flock came right back in the
second to win by 7 to (i on home
runs by (lube I Srcssler and liabe
Herman in the eighth and ninth
respectively.
The first game witnessed the
rout of both 1 Jirry 1 teuton and
F Jazzy Vance, John Morrison did
a fair job of finishing for the
Robins, but the Ciant pitching
remained Indifferent. Melvin (HI
hit. his 15th homer, and liill
Terry also hit for the circuit.
Itill got tvne out of 10 in the
two games, lifting his average
to .400 and himself to the league
leadership.
The fiiants were not the only
contending team to run Into
trouble yesterday. Red Lucas out
pitched Irvin Rratne at Cincin-
hatl to shade Pittsburgh by - to 1
ahd the Cubs thumped the Cardi
nals by 13 to t; at Chicago, as
Hack Wilson hit two homers. This
1 mind of results left the Cardi
nals holding a three-point lead
find their heads. The Pirates
vro second, three points ahead
of the Cubs.
The 4 to 2 victory of the Phil
lies o ve i the Urn ves wa s notable
chiefly for the 1 "in home run
of Charley Klein, the slugging
outfielder , of tho Philadelphia
team. Lester Sweetland pitched
unart ball against Pen Ca ntwoll
and Levcrett.
