FROST SEASON
ROGUL VALLEY
DECLARED
OVER
Floyd Young to Cease Fore-jY".ned
cast Heaviest Damage'
Since 1924 May. 6-7
Worst KM ED Proved
Big Aid to Growers.
Tho treat season for the year was
declared officially at ul) end today
by Kloyd Youhr, the "government
froBt expert stationed hero annually
during-the froBt period fur .the .past.
13 yaara. This does not necessari
ly mean that there will" lie no more
frost but that Mr. Young has given
out Ills last frost forecast by radio
or 'telephone for the year , and, .alt
er closing up the official matters
Incidental to the season's work,
will depart from the city Jlonday.
' Tho last frost of the seacon was
during lust Monday night when
thero was smudging throughout Hie
Valloy with u minimum of ;(4. in
Medford and of as low as 28 In
some of the colder located or
chards. This was not generally
uoticeablo because little smudge va
por was seen in Medford. How
ever, tho smudge smoke was heavy
In the south section of the valley,
especially around Table Hock.
: Today's minimum was 38 in JJed
ford. . -
Tho frost season, which officially
ended today and which began on
March lfi, is a record breaking one
In tho valley's history, there hav
ing been 23 frosts with 20 smudg
Inge of varying Intensity. A lot of
loss was caused by the frost, but It
Is humanly impossible, according
to Mr. Young, to tell with any ac
curacy just how much.
The lowest temperature reached
was 22 In Medford and 19 in the
orchards, on March 211. jhe next
lowest was on the night of March
31 with' a minimum of 24 in Med
ford and of 19 In the orchards.
These Irosts, however, did not do
any extcuulfe damage because of
qomlng before the fruit had dovel-.
oped.
f. A . peculiar feature of the front
season was that the big damage
wh'b dene on the night of May 6 and
the-'morning of May 1, when the
mlrilm was 31 in Medford
and-2T In the orchards.
.'. J In general, the damage caused
by frost during tha season was the
heaviest in the history of the valley
since tho year 1924. The fact that
there wns 20 sn-.udgings lurin the
:seuson, a record breaking nuinb'er,
tyUL-, causa , .general t suuiiriac... as
while there, were more smudgings
the sn'uHlgo smoke generally seliin
,od to ho less noticed than in past
, yoai'B, hue io better oil and better
smudgliig equipment being used.
I'.in briefly reviewing the Iho sea
Sfiil generally today Mr. Young sajil
' Hie 'orchard men and the valley as
a whole should, he Very grateful
for" the slendid- service rendered
during the season by KMED, the
local- station, in broadcasting his
forecasts, and to the Home Tele
phone company in also niving out
the forecasts from the exchange office.-
Ho said:
:-.."Tho fruit men of the valley
, should be very appreciative and
grateful for the KMED frost broad
casting services, as the manage
ment always cheerfully detailed a
man to open up the station and
send cut my forecast on those
nights when the station was closed.
Tho jradlo enabled me to more
fuly express my slieup of tho situ
ation for the orchards in my night
ly forecases at 8 p. m."
On .leaving here Monday, Mr.
Young wil visit the orchard dh
