BATS TO CRACK
AT FAIR GROUND
IN NEW LEAGUE!
Ashland and Klamath Falls
Join Medford in Amateur
Circuit First Game Set
for Sunday Two Teams
in This City.
Formation of a baseball league
In southern Oregon, embracing: the
cities of Ashland, Klamath Falls,
and two teams In this city, is now
underway, and the first game will
bo played at the fairgrounds next
Sunday afternoon between Medford
and Ashland.
The Owon-Oregon Lumber com
pany will provide a second team in
this city.
The league will bo conducted on
a profit-sharing basis with no sal
aried players. Ten per cent of each
game's receipts will be put in a
pot for the champion. The bal
ance will be divided after expenses
are paid, 'between tho two teams,
60 and 40 per cent.
The league will have a president,
who will be a sort of a dictator,
with tho power to take a team's
share of the gate receipts if it vio
lates the rules.
The league is being backed in
this city by Court Hall and Paul'
Taylor, and in Ashland by I'olk
Minlnger.
Klamath Falls started to piny in
a league with Bend, but discovered
it could not stand the financial
strain of imported players and long
trips.
The idea of tho league Is to have
teams composed entirely of home
players and each team will nlgn an
ironclad agreement that it will Im
port no seml-prbs, ot1 use. saine'ln
any of tho games.
There is plenty of baseball .ma
terial In this city, but so far this
year they have been venting their
surplus baseball energy on kitten
ball. Among the players available
nro Jack Hughes, Bud Conlln, Ma
honey, Clarence Dunn, Harry,
Freddie Dunn. Don Harriot, Bill
Morgan, Al Melvin and others.
Tho Owen-Oregon company has a
Strong list of available players.
The Ashland team will draw its
players from tho Normal school,
And has a strong team ready for
fiction.
Klamath Falls ts ; in' the same
boat. They have plenty of ball
players.
It Is expected that the leaders of
tho league movement will .hold a
meeting this week, and formulate
a schedule.
The' promoters of, the plan win
ask for no financial support from
business mem except that thoy
come to tho games..
Paul Taylor will probably be
manager of the local team, with
Court Hall as chief advisor and
factotum.
, AJ1 those interested have pledg
ed themselves to keep the league
on a strictly amateur basis.

It has been a long thno ci:ice
National league fans have had an
opportunity of watcning the New
York Giants and Brooklyn Dodg
ers battle It out for last place at
this more or less into date In the
season while the Boston H raves
and Philadelphia take up tho bur
den of making some kind of a
showing against tho undeniably
stronger western clubs. Hut that
is just what they aro watching!
now, unless they decline to let1
themselves believe what their eyes
tell them.
"'In recent years' 'when the center
of National league strength has
rested west of the Alleghcnics, the
Olants and, to a lesser degree,' tjie
Hoblns, have been able to muster
tho strongest defenses for repell
ing western thrusts. This year
these two clubs have made a sorry
showing while the surprising Pbll-,
lies and the still more surprising;
Braves- tiave at least put up some!
sort of a battle to remain within j
striking distance of the throe lead-!
Ing western clubs Chicago, St 1
Louis and Pittsburgh. ThU.con-
ditlon may, andt probably, vlll, 1
change, but it has been ail' Inter-j
csting phenomenon in a season full
of strange occurrences. ' ' I
Tho Cubs maintained their hold
on the lead by downing the PI-,
rates, 6 to 1, behind Cuy Hush's
five-hit pitching yesterday. . Tho i
Cubs made their eight hits off
Stevo Kwetonle count. "" "'
At Cincinnati, Jess Haines re
corded his 14lh straight league vic
tory In two seasons when ho pitch
ed the Cardinals to an easy 5 to 1
triumph over the Iteds. Haines
finished tho 1928 season with nine
consecutive triumphs and has udd
ed five straight this year.
At Brooklyn, tho Kohins trounc
ed the Giants, 6 to 1, William Wat
son Cfarlt, young left-hander, giv
ing the men of MeGraw only two
hits. Only in the fifth did Clark
falter. In that frame two singles
and a sacrifice gavo tho Giants
their only run. The Dodgers pound
ed Karl Huhhel out of the box in
tho third, but were stopped by
Ualph Judd, a rookie.
Cold weather forced postpone
ment of the Braves-Phils buttle at
Boston.
Only two American league games
woro scheduled, tho Athletics
Htrengthenlng their hold on first
place by downing the Boston lied
fciox, 5 to , while the St. Louis
Browns were beating Chicago, 6
to 3.
Kildie Botytnel held the lied Rox

fifth consecutive victory and a lead
of .two full games over the Yan
kee. Charlie Huffing went the
route, for the Kox. allowing only
eight hits but passing ten men.
The Browns got to Thomas and
Walsh for U Hits while Sam Gray
was limiting Chicago to; 10, well
scattered. It was Gray's first Vic

The Yankees engaged in an x
