MEDFORD 20
JITDGIN'O by the responses received, our "Do You Rcrnorh
' 'ber" feature lias m'ndc n decided hit; the "20 years ago"
column being particularly Appreciated. ' '
In tho many comments Teecivcd from, old-timers, there is
one common note which might be expressed in the familiar
complaint, '.'Them days has gone forever." Ono subscriber
writes about 'wbtrt n pity is is
evidence today. ' M
JfcdfordAvas a genuine "boom town" 20 years ago. There
WAS something doing every minute. People from all pnrts 6f
the country were pouring into the city, the 'two small hotels
were filled to the doors, and a tent' city had to bo put up to
accommodate (he .overflow. Orchards'' were, being sold as high
ai; $2000 per acre, big deals were being closed by wire, the pur
chasers fearing they would lose out if their checks were put in
the mail. It was a great time to be in Mx-dford, and it is per
fectly Irild ',( hem' days has gone
, , .i
BUT there was another side
in gaining this perspective,
"DAY8." for, after about 400 of them, the stampede was
over and in 00 more tlie "boom" liad definitely busted. In
1911 Medford nwokc andr what
those attracted by the "easy money " departed, and it took the
''biggest'little city on the coast" nearly a decade to completely
recover. . .-
So, as one of those who shared in this period of recupera
tion, wo do not agree with "old-tiincrs" who deplore the fact
that tho "spirit of 1909" has departed.' In fact, we much prefer
the spirit and the conditions at present prevailing
.'
MEDFORD lias grown up. The exuberance and extrava
gance of youth have been replaced by the sober sense and
wisdom of maturity. Instead of building on the sands of hys
teria and speculation, JTcdford is building upon the rock of
constructive development -and genuine achievement.
; In othor words, we believe that tho conditions in Medford
today are not only better than they were 20 years ago, but bet
ter than they have ever been in the city's history. It is natural
to paint the past in roseate colors; youth in retrospect is always
the "perfect 'era." But Calm analysis almost' always discovers
half of the jiict ure to bo hallucination. '
!
TIIK "whoopee" hns gone, but so has the hot air. The big
kick has departed, but o has "the morning after." Thoso
who wish the old days back, may have them; but give us these
new days, with less inflation nnd more production; with less
bnlly-hoo nnd more performance. the good ship "Medford"
going full si cum ahead, with a firm , hand on the wheel and a
clear eye on the bridge, determined to steer clear of those
rocks, which no real lioom town of the "glorious past" 'ever
avoided. ' ' . " ' " ' '
Yesterday is dead! Long live today! '
KEEP POLITICS
IX the construction of Mcdford's new airport preference
should bo given to local labor, local materials, and local
technical ability. This is merely good business. But prefer
ence does not mean, and should not mean, running the risk
of sacrificing efficiency to local pride.
Tlie peoplo of Medford nVust pay for this airport. And
what they want abovo everything else, is tho best and niost sat
ifactory airport their money can provide, regardless of the
habitat of who construct it. ,
If Ibis can be dune .with local labor,- materials and ability,
well nnd pjood. But it it ean't be, then the City Council is justi
fied in going as far afield as meeting this necessity demands.
"''
ONIC thing seems to irs certuin This is an ngo of specializa
tion, and nothing is more specialized at present than the
airplane industry in all its phases.
Whatever the labor, materials, or technical ability, the re
sponsibility and control must
and should bo in the hands of
ist, or specialists, that can be found. .
This statement may seem unnecessary to those familiar with
just what the council is trying to do. But wo' have written it
in answer to an unsigned coinmuniciitiou, urging this jinper to
lake up the cudgels for those who "don't want any outsiders
to handle this job or nny part of it." V 1 , '
f !
THE Sooner those who share the sentiments of our anony
mous communicant are toUl to "go wny back nnd sit Vowii"
the better for all concerned. Polities has no place iu this prob
lem. It is entirely a business problem. And every considera
tion of good business demands that efficiency and not geog
raphy should determine who shall and who shall not take part
in this airport construction.

In Act one, after the usual
amount of by-plny, wo enunciated
a physiological principle, namely,
that in most cases of high blood
pressure or hypertension" as doc
tors love to call it, we find on
enreful observation that the pa
tients have a low breathing habit,
that is, they breathe more slowly
than normal persons and their
breathing is more shallow thn
that of normal persons. We are
speaking only of uncomplicated
hypertension -7- high blood pres
stiro without associated organic
disease. Where the medical exam
ination ellcitH signs of nay, enlarge
ment (hypertrophy of the heart,
oi chronic nephritis, Brlght's dis
ease) or arteriosclerosis, harden
ing of the arteries) the patient
had better forget all about high
blood pressure and follow his doc
tor's ndvlco just nn it high blood'

two, In which wo explain how ex
erclso always tends to lower high
blood pressure, just aH walking
tends to relieve the distension of
varicose veins in the legs, although
prolonged standing or sitting, par-:
tlcularly In slouched or slumped
'position, aggravates such trouble.
You see, exerclso serves to pump
blood from the systemic clrcuhi-1
tlon Into the great veins near the
heart. . J
Well, we're getting along now.
Prom now on you will get little
practical help out of this if you;

I know this Isn't dono in the
best Tcgulated households, hut Justj
tno same, 1 enn almost promise
you that by riienns of only Ja. few
minutes' uso of almost any old
diaphragm every day the blood
pressure may he brought clown an
average of 30 per cent of tho
excess and kept down Indefinitely.
Hero wo must beg tho indul
gence of the editors for a para
graph which will certainly sound
weird If not comical if we can't
Hay belly when we hiean "belly.
Jf holly Ih absolutely taboo, then
I beg and plead thnt no synonym
be substituted for the word In this
paragraph, for there Is none in
the Kngllsh language; belly Is the
anterior nbdomlnnl wall. Prac
tically, tho diaphragm la one mus
cle, the belly Ih another. When
the diaphragm contracts It presses
down upon the liver, stomach,
spleen nnd other nppurtonnnens
of tho abdomen and causes the
belly to bulge; when the diaph
ragm relaxes this pressure is re
leased and the belly again retracts
or falls.
Natural breathing is mainly dia
phragmatic . or belly breathing.
Queer thing, but theso birds de
veloping high blood pressure, hy
pertension, soem to weaken first
in the vicinity of tho diaphragm
and belly; they get into a habit
of slacking tho breathing business;
they take only 14 or 15 breaths
a minute, nt rest,1 Instead of IS
or more, ns a healthy adult should;
und their breathing is shallow, too.
(Cuss It, we'll have to ndd an
other act, after all.)
