Color to Suit Emotional Needs
. Latest Invention Announced for
! Putting Heart Throb in Talkies
.By Howard W. Blakealea,
Associated Preses Science Editor.
iEW YpRK,. May a. (P) A
new development In the "talkleaV
whoroby a producer may "turn on
the moonlight" for lovo scenes, or
uao all the tints from blue, to red
to run th,e gamut of emotidns, was
announced Ijcforo the Society of
.Motion Picture Engineers here to
day. ' ' , -
, Tho invention restores tho "col
ors' which wero lost to some mo
tion pictured -when tho "sound
track" vfns introduced along the
edge of tho photographic film. This
does not mean pictures In natural
colore? but Whadlng the whole scene
to Any . iesired tone. It not only
restore ithe color which was lost,
but according to tho announce
ment gOes further by replacing
olght lost'toneii with 16 new ones.
It Is designed to get, completely
away from flat; 'neutral grey. - (
Tho restoration process was anr
nounced by Loyd A. Jones, head
of tho physics department of the
Eastman laboratories. , ,
Ho said that tho colors will en
able projection of scenes in all-
over tints, giving tho blue of the
sea to views needing that quality,
orango peachblow to iove iCfcnes,
cneerrui glow to iirelit scenes,
yellow brilliancy for sunlight, emo
tionally cool green to the forest,
repressive dork blue tp murky night
views and a pompous royal purple
to ceremonial occasions. :
"Careful study and experimen
tation,"' said Mr. Jones "may lead
to tho development of this lan
guage or symbolism into a power
ful emotional tool in the hands of
tho master motion picture drama
tist."
The reason why- heretofore the
sound track Inhibited use of colors
was In the need of the photo-electric
cell for plenty of light.
Anything interfering with blue din-1
torted sound, and tho jold color i
processes Interfered., '
In sight of the delegates today,
Mr. Jones laid six to eight AtripeH
of his color tone films one above '
the other, and let light penetrate i
them. In whatever order he cotn-'
bined them, a steady blue-violet I
light camo through. Tho blue was'
visible even through combinational
thnt to the eye seemed devoid of
that color. So much more sensi
tive Ih the photo-electric eye than
tho human organ, that under the
new process tho rays operating the
sound do not interfere with the op
posite colors that appear on the
screen.
The new colors are sunshine,
brilliant yellow; candle-flame, pas
tel orange-yellow; firelight, soft
orange-yellow; afterglow, rich or
ange; peachblow, flesh pink; rose
doree, deep warm pink;, verdante,
a pastel green; aquagreen, brilliant
blue-green; turquoise, brilliant
blue; uzuro, strong1 skyblue; noc
turne; deep violet blue; purplehnze,
bluish violet or lavender: fleur-de-lis,
royal purple; amaranth, pur
ple with. a red tinge; caprice, cool
pink; nnd inferno, fiery red tinged
witb vagenta.
These tints are projected from
poHitlve films. Mr. .Tones told also
of a newly developed negative,
made especially to get rid of sound !
distortion, such as causes tho hero- i
Ine to talk through her nose. In
this development apparatus was
perfocted that measured sounds too i
faint for the ear to detect." ' ' I
