A monster steelhead for this
section of southern Oregon was
caught In the Rogue river yester
day afternoon in the Dodge bridge
loealiiy, which set all local anglers
a go g when t h ey h ea rd of It yes
terday or today.
The- capture was made by Tom
Carney, who is classed as an ex
port amateur angler and who enp
t u red a prize offered several
years, aso by a Mcdford sporting
Koods store for rniching tho
largest salmon of that seahoii.
The, steelhead captured yester
day weighed 12 Si pounds and,
hard for local anglers(io believe,
it was caught on a NrtVMO Royal
Coachman fly after a royal battle
of two hours and 45 minutes, dur-g
Ing which Carney waded back and
forth up to his armpits much of
the time, it is said, fighting the
big gamey fish back and forth
over a quarter mile distance,
taking blm beneath the bridge a
number of times.
So exciting was the battle that
auto parties coming along and
hearing that Carney had some
thing unusually big on the end of
his line, stopped, and soon the
road In tho bridge vicinity was
lined with cars, and also many
other anglers gathered to witness
the struggle nnd Its outcome.
It is very rarely that so large
a Ktrelhcad Is landed In this sec
tion of the state. It Is said, al
