tics show that a tremendous percentage of tho boys and girls
who take to crime Arc not so wrong morally as physically. The
perfectly normal and healthy child is not necessarily the angel
child, but he is almost never the criminal child.
Given normal health,, the child quickly graduates from the
inevitable "outlaw" stage and becomes the useful and law
abiding citizen.
SO, as we have remarked before, here is an organization and
a community service which deserves not only the support
of every citizen, morally, but materially.

exercise, as any kind of muscular
effort tends to increase the blood
pressure. This Is all wrong. The
truth is that almost every kind of
exercise tends to lower blood pres
sure, and Indeed one of the Impor
tant causes of hypertension or ex
cessive blood pressure Is neglect of
exercise, failure to take sufficient;
exercise every day, particularly
failure to take the minimum ra
tion, six miles of oxygen on the
hoof, every day.
No. doubt extreme exertion,
overexerclsev may run up tho blood
pressure In certain cases of organic
disease. Such a result is very ex
ceptional and need not deter any
health conservationist from walk
ing to work.
Borne medical authority or other
recently circulated a warn i n g
about the golf habit, which he inti
mated will raise a fellow's blood
pressure If he doesn't watch out.
This authority seemed to favor
barnyard or sidewalk golf and very
little or that. Once or twlco I have
been compelled to listen to a gang
of golf fiends exchango comments,
and I made up my mind that I
shall never Iay that game when I
grow up. I'm a teetotaler, and be
st d oh, I prefer games whro there
is less talking and more action,
such as checkers or poker. But
having heard these fiends discuss
their game I think I know why
golf raises blood pressure It Is
tho effect of tho nineteenth hole,
plus tho unfortunate fancy of
many players that tho gamo is
exercise. Exercise for a tottering
old geezer, perhaps, but not for a
man still living.
To a, considerable extent tlito
relative, proportions, of the.enir
volume of blood contained in.ttia
general circulation and In the
lesser circulation (right sldo of
heart and lungs) determines Hid
degree of blood pressure. Th
vast capillary network In tho lungs

variations -of the proportion of the
circulating blood In this area.
I explained hero recently how
exercise such as brisk walking
pumps blood out of the veins In
tho legs into the great veins that
carry tho blood back toward the
heart this is tho reason why
walking Is a good exercise for per
sons subject to varicose veins, tho
prolonged standing Is rather harm
ful. AVell, now, exercise has a sim
ilar effect on high blood pressure;
It pumps blood from the general
circulation Into the lesser circula
tion; this obviously relieves the
tension In the general circulation.
Tension is pressuro of the blood
on tho arterial wall. Hd you had
better be stepping out If you want
to savo your arteries.

sational battle with the Mediter
ranean fruit fly at Orlando, Fla..
may bo only the opening shot in
ono of the country's greatest fight
to exterminate a foreign pest, fed
eral officials fear.
The full force, of the federal
government's powerful machinery
for fighting fruit pests is behind
tho drive.
Decision of the federal horticul
tural board to embrace all of
Florida in a quarantine controlling
the movement of fruits and cer
tain vegetables opened the door
to federal participation in tho bat
tle. It was reached after .con
ferences with Florida officials and
citrus growers.'
The quarantine is in no sense,
an embargo, but all shipments
will be made in accordance with
regulatory measures.
For 100 years the Mediterran
ean fruit fly has been known to
science and during that time
has spread throughout tho world.
Until It appeared in Florida. North
America was the only large area
to escape. , 1
Thero is no knowledge of the
manner in which it gained en
trance. Heretofore it has been
kept out of this country by an
embargo on certain products from
Infested countries. Tho process
has required tho constant vigilance
den at catching a husband, but
sporty little cars have spoiled the
used-car market.

grapefruits, lemons, limes, peaches,
apples, quinces, pears plums and
grapes.
