    CHILD HEALTH OF
COUTO1EQ
The health honor roll children !
of Jackson county will celebrate
their achievement In their own!
communities instead of coining to
A! od ford for one big parade, as they
did on May 1st last year. Many J
Inquiries arc coming, in the public;
health nurses from children who
hovo worked hard this winter to
bring their heaiih up to the stand
ard of the honor roll and who now
feel like celebrating on May 1st---Natlonnl
Child Health day.
Nurses and teachers arc arrang
ing health plays, pageants, etc., in
,each school district whose children
aro interested In health.
But the big celebration, when the
people of Jackson county have the
opportunity of acknowledging the
children on the health honor roll,
will he on children's day during
tho county fair in September. At
this time tho prize winning schools'
will be given cash awards by the
fair board and healthy children
will be honored as enthusiastically
(dyt the healthy pigs, calves, lambs,
rabbits,- etc.
Detailed directions have been
mailed to tho schools through the
cooperation of the school heads v
fnii board, and public health asso
ciation. According to Miss Carl
ton, president of tho health- asso
ciation, the buttons will bo given to
the children la May and should be
saved carefully for the. parade of
schools at tho fair. -
Al l. TALKING FILM IS
If any one in the large and
greatly plctim-d audiences at Hunt's
(Valerian t heater lust night had
the slightest Idea at the beginning
of "The Canary Murder Case," the
great all-tulklng film play, that it
would be like some other mystery
moving picture composed of a
mixture oft horror inspiring thrills,
shrinks, groans ond grotesque. Im
possible nnd mystifying incidents
of the hokum variety, ho or she
guessed completely wrong. For
"The Canary .Murder Case" Is to
tally different and Is acted out so
seemingly natural, i
. True,.- the murder mystery and
thrills ore there, but the Jhrills
are more of the intellectual sort
and ttru not awe inspiring thru
imaginary four,, but are brought
, about normally.
- Tho'iWdTy- leading-up to-thcMi.ur-dnr
ami the efforts of the police
and detectives afterwards to solve
the case, arc shown to the nudi
onco in continuous sequence of
'lialogue and action.. ,
; The uudience sees everything
but the actuul murder scene in a
closed room of the gilded, gold
digging . and blackmailing young
stHgc woman (Louise Brooks).
You seo every one of the half
dozen suspects and know the rea
son each would have .for perpe
trating the murder, and you sit
fairly rooted to your seat and ob
livious to all else as you strain
mentally with tho polico In doping
out who committed tho crime.
Thero is no big lovo story, and
buL little music synehronhwition,
or aecompi.nyment, to take your
mind off the riddle, and you watch
with, keenest relish tho deductions
of the metropolitan police chief
nnd other officers, which you at
first think must bo correct and,
y- based on horso sense evidence,
until I'hllo Vance, the, suavo nnd
unusually keen wilted private de
tective, played by AVIlliam I'owcll.
upsets with his Ingle all previous
theorieH and bares the mystery.
In, fact "Tho Canary Murder
Case." which plays every after
noon nnd night at tho Crateriau
Ihenter unlil Sunday, Is an intel
lectual treat and a "bird" of a
screen talking play.
It Is intermixed thruout with
wholesome comedy which brings
out many laughs. Tho heartiest
spontaneous laugh of all came in
tho. tense poker gamo of tho mur
der suspects and Detective Vance,
when one hand narrows down to
but two players, and when . the
show-down conies the winner has
only n pair of deuces and the high
est card in the loser's hand Is an
eight spot. This incident tends to
Illustrate that not only Is Med ford
"a groat country," but that : Its
people understand poker, bluffing.
