N NEW WHIPPETS-
'For more thnn a year prior to
tho public 'prcsvntailon of the now
"Superior Whippet fours and sixes,
Willys - Ovorluml desinqis and
body oxpertR were working out
plans to provide a car that would
establish a new conception of
roominess and comfort In the In
teriors. TIk-kc well laid plans find
their eultninatlon In the introduc
tion of the new Whippet models
which aro definlioly characterized
by extra head room, leg room and
. elbow room.
With an Increased whcelhase in
both the four and six-cylinder
.models to work from, the design
ers took advantage, of every avail
able Inch of Hpacc. This resulted
In production of thp present Whip
'pet fours and sixes which provide
maximum roominess for driver and
passengers.
The seats of both Whippets are
wider than those , of the former
models, deeply upholstered and sci
entifically designed to fit the nat
ural body curves. The use of
snubhoi'K. oversize balloon tires ami
the Increased spring length, both
front and rear, further materially
enhances the riding qualities cf
these cars.
Several change's in design of the
Interiors have made for Increased
comfort and ease of operation for
the driver. The use of the new
"finger-tip control," which enables
the driver to start the engine, op
erate the lights and sound the hum
from n single button in the'eenter
of the steering wheel, Is another
convenience that adds to the com
. fort of driving.
- Tho use of engines of higher
compression in both the fours ami
sixes, which provide a better pmver
and speed performance, are also
included in the features which
have established a dominant posi
tion for these cars in their respec
tive fields.

SINGER TO BE ENDED
BY ATLANTIC VOYAGE
WASHLVUTOX, April 20. P) -j
In the -life of Frances Lou there
has been song, romance,, enough ;
tragedy for a grand opera and ;
more tragedy seems In store. !
Frances Lou Is a mocking bird, j
t'ntil two years ngo, life was just
one sweet song after another, and;
then a- hoy with an air rifle shot'
and blinded' her. She fell under ;
an evergreen in Cleveland park j
hnd was starving to death when a
passerby found her and carried '
her to a bird store. Two years in j
a cage and then nine-year-old Tad
Kgan carried her home with him.
There followed pleasant. If event- j
lees days, until one morning a gay I
mocking bird, an accomplished;
singer and ardent lover, flew to 1
the window pane near Francs Lou's
cage, tapped on the glass with his
beak and then retired to a nearby,
tree, where ho sang a number of
bird melodies. That was weeks I
ago and each day since then, nc-(
cording to the Kgan family, he has
attracted Frances Lou's attention
each morning by tapping on the ;
gl;iss and then bus given his sere-
mule.
it seems, however, that the lov
c;s will never be united. The Kgan
family is going to the iJritish isles
for the summer Arid a'new home Is
sought for Frances Lou.

The earth's radius at the equator

certain conditions in the canned
goods trade, shown In the hand-to-mouth
buying of eastern deal- ;
era, is being reflect-ed in 'the usual t
spring activity of packers in con- !
trading fruit In the Willamette j
valley, a survey made by the Cap
Ital Journal among growers and (
packers operating in this field re- .
veals. j
Contrary to what i.s usually the!
case, packers are contracting only
for what fruil is needed to fill
hooked orders in most cases, and i
it Is generally conceded that iherp j
Is more uncontractcd fruit in this
section than for many years past. '
Practically no loganberries have:
been purchased and most of those!
signed up quote only the pr
vailing
market price being paid by
the
buyer at the time of delivery.
Practically all of the 192S pack
of other varieties f fruit have
I been cleaned up, the caner.s rc
,'port, except f(r a few apples' and
blackberries still held in western
'. Washington.
; r.ut even this cleanup has not
j operated to stimulate buying in
I anticipation of the present season's
. needs, although the packers assert
'.they can see no reason why the
entire fruit production wjll not be
handled this year, with tho excep
tion of logans.
Both growers and packers .are
optimistic over the strawberry out
look and a good crop and good
prices are both predicted. Prices
being written Into the contracts
range from five cents up, with that
price prevailing for Marsluills .for
