TRIBUNE, MEDFORD,
PAGEANT OF PETS
IS GALA OCCASION
( By Mary Crrincr)
Was there ver such a day In
Medford before? At least 200
young Jackson, county boys and
girls who attended the pet show
nt the Armory today, will answer
"No." The atmosphere over the
enst Main street bridge through
out this morning, quivered -with
the Joyous excltemnt of youth
as the stirring cadence - of the
Junior drum corps garbed In white,
uniforms and white sashes, burst
upon the ear. ,
Crowds of grownups lined cither
sldo of the bridge and looked
down upon tho scene of bustling,
colorful activity in the children'.
playground below. On one side of
the grounds stood the petite drum
corpB, nnd on the opposite side
stood the high school band in
their snappy red and black uni
forms, filling the air with music.
And in hetween these was a
pageant of humor, human nature
and the human appeal that the
story of childhood always has to
tell. There were minor woes and
near tragedies spontaneous, glee
ful laughter, culminating hi tears
and reverting again to laughter.
Tiny hands stroked soft fur
hard fur bristles and feathers
of beloved pets. Tears welled up
In ono small pair Of eyes, when
the unruly hair around her little
dog's collar wouldn't stay smooth
like she wanted It to. He wasn't J
a bad dog, and he was awfully,
smart, sho conflled loyully to a
sympathetic spectator, but some
how ho didn't have tho self-confidence
nnd show-off qualities
ihut some of tho other canine
specimens around there-had. If
she could only tell tho Judges
some of -the flno Inatlncts her pet
had! But alas, dogs not unlike
human 'beings tiro too often Judged
on outward appcurances!
Then there was tho llttlo red
dish pet kid, held- lovingly In tho
arms of a small -red-haired boy.
Someone was going to kill the llt
tlo animal once, and its present
owner. Intervened, saved Its ..lifo
and would never let anybody else
ever lay hands on him No, Sir
except mnybo tho Judges when
they go to pin the blue-ribbon
on him. : - ' ;
In a cage nearby there were
threo blind mice oh. no not
blind mice at all. Their eyes were
pink and glassy, but they could
see ull light. Their fur was soft
and white and their long talis
curled up onto the walls of the
neat little cage.
A donkey straddled by n small
boy. brayed in rivalry to tho
bund and drum corps and was
given a look of scorn by the
smart Tnillan 'nonv u few. feel bn-
vomf. Bantam roosters crowed
lit tho top of their weo lungs,
from -their cages -on small wagons,
lined up for the parade.
Kittens purred smugly nn
yawned In their sunlit boxes,
while canaries contributed "brief,
sweet solos nnd duets to the gen
eral vocal ensemble.
The procession finally started
up Main street a strungo assort
ment of mlnlaturo floats audi en
tries. Tho white ruts peered out
of their cage at tho donkey ahead
of them, und observed humorously
to each other that ho might not
ho n thing of beauty, but that his
ear for music most certainly must
be a Joy forever.
Tho parade, after winding It
way through the principal down
town avtrcets, camo to a hnlt at
the armory, whero tho Jackson
county pet show Was officially
opelied by tho humane society nt
.one o'clock, and will continue
until this evening.

TO TATOO BIRDS
PREVENT THEFT!
jtooed with their private brand
cooperation with the poultry own
ers of the remainder of the stnte,
as the result of cooperative action
now under way between Dr. V. H.
Lytle. state veterinarian, and the
county agents of Oregon, whereby
poultry branding will become gen
era! among tho commercial pro
ducers.
Arrangements have been made
with Dr. Kytlo for recording the
poultry brands under existing state
laws. Tho registration nnd assign
ment of brands In each county will
be made by the county agent's of
fice of that county. . ,
County Agent R. O. Fowler, who
handles the livestock and agricul
tural end of the work of the coun
ty agent's office, will look after
the branding .work in this county
and forward the applications for
different brands to the state veter
inarian's office at Salem for regis
tration. . The registration fee will
be fifty cents. The key letter, as
signed to Jackson county Is tho
letter O, and under this letter the
county poultrymen i can- register
their Iminds from the figures one
to 999, or higher, if necessirry. The
Josephine county key letter is It.
Kuoh turkey or chicken will be
tattooed or Intituled on the webs
of the right or left t', wing. . The
branding outfit will cost only
about 2, and the brand tattooed
cannot be effaced, even by cook
ing. -It Is not yet known just what
the branding material will consist
of, hut the extension department
of tho Oregon Stnte college Is now
at work Investigating methods for
marking the birds.
Anyhow, the die or ink used ill
the branding will be so little on
each bird that no pulsonous effects
can result to the bird, or human be
ing eating' tho same. Thus univer
sal branding of poultry in each
county, it Is expected will do nwuy
with -tlio- stealing of poultry, as
stolen poultry can be easily traced
by. the brands.
A new stale law requires that all
carcases of livestock or poultry be
cither stamped or IMtve a bill of
sale. This luw is lotended to put
un end to the stealing of livestoi-k-t
nnd nlso'of poultry. While the full
letalls of Its provisions have not
yet been received here It Is thought
that the bill of sale, us applied to
poultry, only applies to large com
mercial, sales of poultry.

Is no way In winch a citizen can
prevent the parking of cars in front
of his residence except hy. using
successful moral suasion with those

Tho city can control the traffic

The question was brought up by

who had complained to him that .
tennis players belonging to the '.

some players were in the habit of
parking their cars In front of the

It seems that the only way to
prevent outside cars' parking In
front of a citizen's home Is tor talm
to ask Uiem not to do so, or at least
leave space enough for the family
car to park there. It the owner of
the offending oar refuses to acqni

him to do so except In the way of
engaging In physical combat, which
the average Medford citizen, will
